COMMENTATORS

NBC Sports’ cycling play-by-play caller Phil Liggett, universally known as the ‘voice of cycling,’ will cover his 52nd Tour de France alongside analyst Bob Roll. Liggett and Roll will be on-site at each stage, along with reporters Steve Porino and former professional cyclist Christian Vande Velde.

Paul Burmeister will host daily pre-race and post-race studio coverage alongside Brent Bookwalter and Tejay van Garderen, who is making his NBC Sports debut as a Tour de France analyst.

PRODUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

NBC Sports will integrate several features into its coverage of this year’s Tour de France:

‘Team Radio’ Audio: NBC Sports will present select ‘Team Radio’ audio during the broadcast, playing clips of the communication between team directors and riders throughout the race
NBC Sports will utilize a cutting edge “Virtual” graphics Telestrator, which debuted throughout the 2019 Tour de France and produces augmented reality cyclist graphics for the commentators to move and analyze
The enhanced augmented reality features will include 3-D animated maps that track where the riders are in real time on the route and profile the stage terrain
Vande Velde will have a camera focused on him as he reports to offer real-time updates on race situations, while traveling aboard a motorcycle on the course
Real-time data of course gradients and the riders’ speeds

NBC Sports’ coverage will include real-time speeds of both the leaders and the peloton, and additional maps that show more detailed versions of the finishes and each mountain climb.

Coverage will also utilize several production enhancements and updated graphic elements, including a pointer feature to easily identify and focus on one rider in the peloton, and exclusive profiles on teams and riders.

The 2024 Tour de France will cover a total distance of approximately 2,170 miles, beginning in Florence, Italy, and finishing 23 days later in Nice, France.

Expected yellow jersey frontrunners in this year’s field include defending two-time champion Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) of Denmark, and two-time champion and 2022 and 2023 runner-up Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) of Slovenia, who won this year’s Giro d’Italia. Contenders are also expected to include Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Vingegaard’s former teammate Primož Roglič (Red Bull BORA – hansgrohe).

Green jersey contenders expected to compete include Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who won four stages and the green jersey in last year’s race and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) . Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team) looks to break a tie with Belgian legend Eddy Merckx (34) for the most stage wins in race history.

Americans expected to participate in this year’s Tour de France include 2024 Paris-Nice winner Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), who finished fourth in mountains classification last year, and Sean Quinn, the 2024 U.S. National Road Race Champion.

Which is why I posted my last post the way I did.

That said - I just edited the first post to include a warning to not open the thread if spoilers are a problem - so feel free to post whatever you want!

Thanks, John.....

At least the riders lucky enough to be chosen for the TdF and the Olympics don't have to travel far this year!

I think Vingegaard will win the tour of course with Pogacar nipping at his heels. Pogacar will get the Olympic win ( I hope he burn himself out on the Tour). I have to look at the course but I hope Van Aert or Remco will win the the Olympic, if not, What's that skinny punk kid's name again? Oh him, Van DerPoel. Since it is besically a single day French race, I know Alaphilippe will turn himself inside out to win even if some of his trade teammates will be paided off to work to get him there. I am so much more interested in these one day races then the tour now. The Worlds will be even more interesting in Zurich. I bet it will be a puncheur's delight so watch Evenapoel.

Did any UAE rider even pull today? Looks like the team rode smart, saving energy, and Pogacar still finished 4th. Visma used everyone they had, except Vingegaard and Van Aert, I guess they were trying to get Van Aert the win, figuring it would be a sprint with all the pure sprinters long gone. QuickStep never pulled, Bora only did a little.

French rider wins again today. That's two in a row for France!

And second stage in a row a breakaway beats the peleton.....yah!

TP in Yellow, as well....with JV and RE right on his tail.

Good start to this year's race!

Man, that area of Italy is beautiful. My wife wants to move there. I can see getting a little place and spending part of the year there. You can get a little house in a beautiful village for not too much, if it lacks mod cons that’s okay, you’re in Italy.

First TdF stage win ever for Arkea, right? What a great ride for Vauquelin. It’s funny to see Abramhansen (sp?) riding so well, because he looks practically obese by the standards of TdF riders.

I’m thinking Pogacar won’t be thrilled to get yellow but no time gap for his attack. Vingegaard marked him immediately and felt strong enough to trade pulls all the way home. Chapeau to Evenenpol for catching up, I assume Carapaz mostly drafted Remco but didn’t see.

Who is responsible for Visma's new jerseys?? These things look horrendous. Did they copy the pattern from some 1800s Victorian wallpaper? The team has become invisible in the peloton. I don't think Sepp got COVID, he simply refused to wear the jersey!

I think it’s one of those things that looks intriguing on its own, but the designer doesn’t think about how it will work in a sea of jerseys. I wouldn’t mind a shirt of that pattern now that I see what it is. Up to now I’ve thought it was some sort of digital camo pattern.

The pattern is, indeed, intentionally a historical motif, from the Renaissance. Explained thus https://www.teamvismaleaseabike.com/shop/cycling-clothing/cycling-jersey-men-2024-the-renaissance/

^^^ I think you're exactly right. I'm sure there's some sort of meaning behind it and it looked great during the marketing presentation, but it's a disaster on TV. On the positive side, the new Red Bull Bora kit looks great.
