I believe the 'rust' is just embedded 'grime' with iron in it, which is why it's not a common problem. If the nickel was too low and they did rust, then they would all be rusting.

IIRC aqueous corrosion in "stainless" steels is likely due to low Cr rather than Ni. The Ni is usually there to keep it austenitic (think kitchen sink rather than chefs knife).

Regardless, I'm guessing it was chosen for price, availability and formablity - a magnet might be handy to check if the bends/creases are magnetic while the flat planes are not suggesting that it is also low Ni.

With absolutely no real knowledge of or even interest in the actual alloy chosen course I stand behind my guess with all of the value it deserves. ;)

I suspect that a long term (or even short) weathering study wasn't one of their priorities. It does make me think though - it'd be cool if it were made from one of the weathering steels that "rust" to a relatively passive uniformish reddish brown. Like modern art for your lawn or a footbridge in the local park.

I've seen quite a few lately. First time I was kind of shocked. My wife said it was extremely ugly, and I told her our stainless kitchen garbage can looked better.
Saw 2 today coming back from Lake George. Family was in a restaurant when I saw this in the parking lot. I asked the 10 year old grand nephew if he wanted to check it out. He was excited and we headed out. When he first saw it he had a very confused look. I asked him what he thought, and he was not very pleased to see it after all the hype he had heard.
This is an interesting one. This guy skipped the stainless look and had an interesting blue paint. I will say it at least was not as bad as the full stainless look.
An hour later heading south on the NYS Thruway saw another one. This one was seemingly stopped by a NYS Trooper and getting a ticket. I guess the Trooper didn't like it either.

Night before last. Check out the rear door. It's discolored from corrosion I'm assuming. On the upside, it's almost brand new.

Though, tbh, I don't really sweat the discoloration and stains on my SS and copper cookware. It's almost a badge of honor that they're actually used. Perhaps I'm at risk of a slide towards attraction to rusty dumpsters?

The black does help in a totally dark universe ... but it still needs a "cloaking device" :D

I saw one in Atlanta yesterday. Lime green wrap with 'Siding World' graphics. What a great rolling billboard it was. Like a 2020's clown car. Tough to not see it. So there is one practical use for them.:D
