did the big Cicada hatch come and go?

it was such big news early this year...now? nothing.

did it happen? was it a disappointment? or are we still waiting?

Our male dachshund loves them as well. Just the best treats possible. I found one that was just emerging from the shell. I offered it to him and he hit it like a kind with chocolate candy. He likes them as they are dead and dried out as well. Those are extra crunchy!

He goes out at night hunting for them. He can smell them in the ground as they are close to emerging. He will dig them up, and gobble them down. And I have little meteor craters in my back yard from his excavations.

We (most of Texas, Cali, and the West half of the US) get left out of the fun. It's mostly east of the Mississippi. We just get the regular annual cicadas.

Here in Texas we have Quesada gigas (Giant Cicadas). I hear them almost every evening in the summer. I usually only hear one or two at a time. They are much louder than the regular cicadas, and they sound different. From a distance, they sound like a whistle.
Not my pic

We also have lots of "regular" cicadas. I've also seen some surprisingly small cicadas here, where the body is ~1/2" long.

Yes, it did, and yes it was a thing. I live in the city of Chicago and we got absolutely nothing. If I hadn't read about it, and gotten pics and video from a friend in the suburbs, I could have gone thorugh most of it never knowing it existed. Went on a ride up the north shore one weekend and was finally exposed to it. It was loud. Video from a friend in Wheaton, and it was practically deafening. Piles of them on the ground by trees, her dog loved them.
