I have new Recaro's in my project, had them in the previous car....they still set the gold standard for long term comfort, support and quality.

I sure hope they get back on their feet with some good German management.....or perhaps get taken over by Porsche so that these special seats will always be available to enthusiasts.

Trouble is, the seats look just like a lot of other aftermarket seats, but the underpinning quality items are hidden away.

Sad, very sad...

You guys see pricing on BBS wheels of late? Looking for a winter set for my new GTI and thought i'd go old school with some LM's. HOLY CRAP!

CurtEgerer 07-31-2024 08:06 AM

^^^ Yes  It's pretty crazy. I don't know, is it like a Rolex thing where you're paying a substantial percentage for the name? Yeah, they are great forged wheels still made in Germany (I think). But I can get a set of forged OZ racing wheels for about a 1/4 of the price.

I've long said that if Recaro and BBS would sue the companies that knock them off just like Rolex does and make an example out of them, they would not be in this mess.

Yes, Recaro seats were OE on my old Audi S4.

A big player in automotive restoration also went under recently. Germany's Kienle Automobiltechnik, a highly-regarded specialist dealing in Mercedes 300SL and 600 models, filed for bankruptcy amid allegations of financial mismanagement and shady dealings. Their assets were sold off to Mercedes-Benz classic car division.

The quality is amazing. Recaros in my SC still look like new after 45 years. And my spare set of them OK after 40.

These are coming out of my SC once the originals are restored. Turning this back into more of a street car. I'll sell them for $5,000/each. Don't low ball me, I know what I have!

Reading a few details on BBS, it is specifically BBS Autotechnik GmbH (Germany) that has filed. They make primarily the cast and flow-formed wheels and those are still being made but under very limited operation. The forged wheels are made by BBS Japan and are unaffected. BBS USA is also unaffected.

The airline seat branch is doing fine - and their seats are torture devices.
The automobile branch is not doing well - despite excellent products, reputation, selling OEM and direct to customers ? It must be spectacular mismanagement !
