Accordion cool ?

This player makes the accordion pretty cool. Lawrence Welk would be proud.

TW was awesome. Could drink a beer, smoke a cigarette and play piano at the same time.

Accordion came up not too long ago and someone posted "Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses)" by Dwight Yoakam. Kinda blew me away (too bad the girl in the song suffered the same fate). I haven't heard an accordion sound more appropriate. Dwight credits Flaco Jiminez here. Banjos get made fun of as well, but in the right song, they're awesome. I'm not sure if I'll ever hear a good bagpipe song, though. Their best use might be limited to funerals...

I've seen Flaco in concert and he's the "go to" squeezebox guy for lots of musicians. Mavericks, Dwight (also on Streets Of Bakersfield), Texas Tornados, and lots of stuff with Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers.

And now to break into discussion groups and compare and contrast.

I'm more a bandoneon Astor Piazzolla type guy, but the accordion really gives me some cool indoor 1970's shopping mall muzak vibes! :)

What is the difference between an accordian and an onion??

No one cries when you chop up an accordian.

Old joke

Saw this vid when it came out 8 years ago and never forgot it

As for Tom Waits meme, I believe that is fake. Tom Waits is almost #1 for me and there is accordion all over his best albums

How about that the internet is a weird place, such a bizarre thing to miss represent, and further proof not to trust anything.

It does sound like something waits would say in jest in an interview or something, seemed believable

ramonesfreak 08-29-2024 07:36 AM

yea does sound like something he would say - if I ever run into him, I will ask him :-)

Lots of good accordion music out there - Paul Simon, Pogues etc...

Loved the meme, loved the picture and if anything he said it tongue in cheek. Tom will use anything at hand to make music - even a swordfishtrombone - and I love him for that.

(And Steve, Squeezebox by the Who isn't a song about an accordion....just sayin'. :))

LOL

Years ago, my dad went through a Tom Waits phase. I don't think I ever heard any. But many years later, I somehow stumbled across some Tom Waits, and fell in love with his music. It's not for everyone, but I enjoy it.

Ive been a Tom Waits fan since around 1974, I think. Saw him one night on Soundstage, a public TV thing. The next day I went out and ordered an album. No Tom Waits in stock. The heart of Saturday night, I believe. The guy at the record store thought I was crazy. Everyone else was buying Stairway to Heaven.:D:D

IIRC, I think my dad may have discovered him in '75 while stationed in Adak, AK.

A little Acccordion goes a long way ;). Our Blues Society would always book a Zydeco band for one slot in our Festival... always got the crowd dancin' ...

A favorite Blues Cruise memory ... Chubby Carrier on the pool deck stage with Lee Oskar (War) and pals ... the boat was freakin' rockin' as we left port somewhere in the Caribbean.... an Accordion verses Harmonica duel at sea ...

Low Rider :)

Other Big AZZ fancy ships just got teased as they towered above .... poof ... gone :)!

Wayne Toups and the Zydecajuns was a great concert. I think he did some prison time but he's still rockin' to this day.

That's a bad record store where the clerk is judging your musical tastes. I remember going into the RS to buy Who's Next and listening to a conversation the clerk was having with some of the Kool Kids about reggae and ska; I'd never heard of Peter Tosh before that.

Stairway to Heaven is good stuff. So is Heart of Saturday Night!

A guy has to be open to some variety for sure.

I had a computer sciences Prof that was a member of Those Darn Accordions. We were serenaded a couple of times.

Full time Geekster.

Along with "Those Darn Harmonicas" .... any solo longer than 30 seconds might cause me go grab another beer ;).... shaddup and play yer guitars :D....

I used to love hitting the record stores every Tuesday when the new releases appeared.... many times buying what they might be playing as I browsed the bins....

Peter Tosh was one like that .... discovered from his connection to the Stones.... who lead me to the blues way back when.... along with a few other blues influenced guitar heros :)....

Just the fact an accordion thread got two pages of responses makes it cool! :)

Here's tonight's addition furthering this instrument's coolness. Back around 1995ish was a movie called "12 Monkeys" which depicted a humanity destroying epidemic and Bruce Willis.
,
I always considered it as themesong for the impending TABSpocalypse :D

edit- And I am not poking fun at TABS, the TABpocalypse, Bruce Willis, or Accordian type instruments! This song (as is the movie where the young Bruce watches himself as Old Bruce get shot in an airport) is incredible. ":)

Thanks, Leaky. Now I gotta watch that again...

Next week we talk about banjos.

LEAKYSEALS951 09-01-2024 04:40 PM

frailing fretless banjos?!?!?!?! :D:D:D

Trust me Steve... This is the one that "got away" :)

It's worse than a Gary Larson cartoon, it's a fretless banjo! (And I wish I had of bought it!!!!)
