Shot for his Rolex

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/ex-mlb-star-rips-san-francisco-after-nfl-player-shot-in-attempted-robbery-absolute-hell-hole/ar-AA1pOAIG?ocid=BingNewsSerp

"Former MLB star Mark Mulder ripped the city of San Francisco on Saturday after 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was wounded in a shooting during a robbery attempt.

The shooting occurred in the Union Square area of the city. Pearsall was reportedly shot by a 17-year-old who tried stealing his Rolex. Pearsall was shot in the chest, but the bullet exited his body without hitting any vital organs, according to his mother, Erin."

Hmmm...any moral here? Perhaps it's hoping you're not drafted to play for the 49ers?
Maybe don't buy a Rolex?

I wear Rolexes all the time, and I often work in the ghetto. The only comment I've ever gotten from someone was from a man with severe dementia in a near vegetative state. But he was obviously a watch guy back in the day and complimented me on my choice. Otherwise, they're invisible to all but watch nerds.

3rd_gear_Ted 09-02-2024 01:35 PM

You can still wear all the Bling you want in Las Vegas. Certain folks don't like the image tarnished.
Things get taken care of.
See ya @ a Redrock LV PCA breakfast some time, great bunch of well connected folks to get to know.

Ridiculous. He shot a man in the commission of another crime. Juvi my Aunt Tillie's arse.

red-beard 09-02-2024 05:37 PM

Unfortunately, this is becoming a "thing". In Europe, this term is "Rolex Rippers".

https://luxurylaunches.com/watches/why-jim-ratcliffe-wont-wear-a-watch.php

Most of the time you are safe in your "natural habitat". Aka, the well-off places in your city.

But go to "Times Square" or other tourist areas and you are likely to be targeted. Usually, it is not broad daylight. Situational awareness is very important.

What a shame. Glad we got to see SF before.

The moral is in the article:

"What an absolute hell hole of a city!" he wrote on X. "The mentally ill Libs will still tell you how beautiful it is all while they get mugged and step in s---."

MBAtarga 09-02-2024 06:12 PM

Just went on a 3 week trip to UK/Ireland. I left the Rolex at home and wore my Tissot Chronometer to avoid any possible "extra" attention.

The Synergizer 09-02-2024 06:42 PM

Remember those rumors from the 1980s of people getting their arms chainsawed off in Miami for their Rolexes?

porsche tech 09-03-2024 03:14 AM

A guy destroys his car in a bad wreck and when the cop gets there, the guy’s sitting on the side of the road, shaking his head saying, “my BMW, my BMW”! The cop says, “what, are you crazy?…you’re worried about your car? You’re missing your left arm”! The guy looks at it and says, “my Rolex, my Rolex”!

Cairo94507 09-03-2024 05:06 AM

It's San Francisco...no different now than Detroit. Run by the Dems and crime is out of control- despite their assurances crime is down. The only thing down is people actually stopped calling the cops because they will not come or not take a report and if they ever do, the DA will not prosecute. What could go wrong?

berettafan 09-03-2024 06:28 AM

Reading the watch forums it seems Rolex is universally recognized as quick easy cash for thieves. Other brands not so much. I would imagine it's the sub and GMT's that are so easy to spot.

masraum 09-03-2024 06:34 AM

I didn't read the article, but it seems to me more likely that the kid was going to mug him "give your wallet, phone, and watch", but not necessarily targeted because of his watch. Or it is possible, if this guy was a sports figure, that the guy had some very flashy version of the watch, gold, diamonds, whatever that might be an issue more than the more "pedestrian" versions that are just stainless.

masraum 09-03-2024 06:37 AM

"Pearsall was released from the hospital on Sunday. The 23-year-old had been walking alone shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time when a suspect tried to rob him with a gun in the Union Square area, according to officials. San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said that more than one shot was fired.

"A struggle between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect ensued, and gunfire from the suspect’s gun struck both Mr. Pearsall and the subject."

The gun allegedly belonged to the suspect and was recovered. Scott said investigators believe the teen acted alone, adding that there was no indication that Pearsall had been targeted because he’s a football player.

"This is how we hold people accountable in San Francisco. Robberies and any violence like this will not be tolerated in our city, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said at a news conference later Saturday."

javadog 09-03-2024 08:53 AM

I remember when Union Square was a really nice part of downtown.

Robberies happen in the nice parts of towns. We just had one the other day here where a guy had his watch taken at gunpoint in broad daylight in the outdoor tables in front of the Beverly Wilshire hotel on the corner of Wilshire and Rodeo in Beverly Hills. The victim was targeted for his 6-figure watch and the robbery was over so quickly that other people sitting around him did not even know it happened. The Beverly Wilshire hotel is famous for many things including being the setting for the film, "Pretty Woman" with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.

Not sure where some of you live but Rodeo Drive in BH is about as high rent as it gets in the USA and BH in general is policed like few places on earth...it's actually known for being "over policed." Not exactly a "defund the police" place.

The point is that crime is a real problem but also people wearing hundreds of thousands of dollars on their bodies are huge targets for robbers...it's like walking around in the lion's den with a pork chop around your neck. Not very smart.

??

I don't think the article or myself were trying to place blame. I believe the point is to provide details/facts about the incident.

"Bob was robbed on Tuesday"
which is super light on details
vs
"Bob was in X location, at Y time, with Z people"
which would be a list of facts/details
vs
"Bob got what he deserved for going to a crack house while wearing a diamond encrusted gold Rolex at 3am"
which would be victim blaming.

Had mine snatched off my arm right through the car window, on River Road, in the middle of the night, in uptown New Orleans. Never saw the dude coming. It was over before it began, and by the time I collected my wits, it was too late to do anything about it. Of course I called the police from my car to report it (1986 BTW), but didn't want to hang around to wait for an officer. I considered it a lesson learned, and have since never worn anything of value on my wrist when I know I could be looked ta as a target. I've also never had another Rolex, as a small part of me carries the superstition that the watch itself caused me to be robbed.

The Synergizer 09-03-2024 02:37 PM

You would think an NFL player could just body slam the guy...

I prefer stories like this:

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Police say a robber looking for someone to buy him a beer picked the wrong man to mess with.

Instead of getting his beer, he ended up getting body-slammed by a former WWE pro wrestler.

The Miami Herald reports Shad Gaspard — who once portrayed a criminal as half of the tag team Cryme Tyme — was at the drink cooler at a convenience store Saturday when Jason Felix approached.

Felix brandished what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun. Store surveillance video showed Gaspard making quick work of disarming Felix.

The 6 foot, 7 inch-tall former wrestler then "escorted" Felix out of the gas station and threw him to ground and detained him until police got there.

Officers charged Felix with robbery.

A Rolex is universally recognized as being very expensive and easily fenced.

I've watched a bunch of videos by a guy that used to be a cop, was also a trainer for the police, and now has an MMA studio. His assertion, and it makes sense, is that most of the time if 2 people end up fighting, and one of them has a weapon, everyone focuses on the weapon which generally makes the fighting by either one less effective. The fighters are less focused on "stop the fight" and more focused on "got to get <weapon> or stop him from using <weapon>". Where if you concentrated on "stop the fight" you might more quickly accomplish the second.

LOL! Awesome! And I'll bet the guy was probably 5'9 or less. I'm sure he was thinking, "I'm gonna make this big guy my beyotch."

THis one is a favorite of mine.

When Susan Kuhnhausen returned home from work one day earlier this month, she encountered an intruder wielding a claw hammer. After a struggle, the 51-year-old nurse fended off her attacker by strangling him with her bare hands.

But after an investigation, police now say the intruder Kuhnhausen strangled was apparently a hit man hired by her estranged husband — Michael James Kuhnhausen Sr. — to kill her.

she was eventually able to get the slight Haffey into a chokehold and police later found him dead in a hallway. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as strangulation.

Ok that nurse story is the greatest! Killed the hitman! Like real life John Wick!

According to a recent YouTube video the Watch thieves (working in teams) in London can spot a fake from across the street.

- Maybe bring back Old School cops on the beat?

Surveillance cameras can help but nothing works as well as a police presence in the streets.

Bill Douglas 09-03-2024 06:47 PM

I don't know what all the fuss is about. The last time I was in Hong Kong a Rolex only cost $25.

The "cheap" good "reps" are about $300 USD. They use Chinese clone movements and look good.

The medium good ones, which use common Swiss movements, look excellent. They are 500-750 USD

The top ones are $1000‐1700 USD and even with the back off, are tough to tell.

OK, some are over $2,000

I got it for my retirement, the Mayor of the city I worked for was a watch guy too and when I went in front of the Council for my retirement plaque, I joked with him that he was supposed to have gotten me a gold Rolex since we were both watch guys and a gold watch is tradition for a retirement. My boss heard it and for a joke got this one and presented to me at my retirement coffee. City Manager took a picture of me with it on and emailed it to the Mayor.

SF eliminated cash bail and banned the use of facial recognition to catch criminals. They have pretty much banned guns so only criminals have them. I guess this should surprise no one.

San Francisco has cash bail, guns are not "banned", (not sure what, "pretty much banned" means), the facial recognition statement was true and I agree with the policy. You can absolutely own guns in San Francisco and even carry with a permit, same as anywhere else in CA. Stores and businesses can employ armed security guards. You can get a job as a security guard and get a carry permit for the job if you are not a prohibited person.

So just to recap, you posted 3 claims in one short post and 2 out of 3 were pulled from your ass. When challenged, you provided a link from 2020 when they DID have a completely pscho DA, (since recalled for being too lefty even for SF),, and ignored links to the current DA who has revived more conventional and stricter detention policies for defendants awaiting trial. You had to skip right past them in your google search for SF bail policy in order to get to the old one about the previous DA:

https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=does+san+francisco+h ave+no+cash+bail&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Sort of a dishonest argument, wouldn't you say? SF is a well known hotbed of progressive politics and many of their law enforcement policies are absolutely open for ridicule but you don't need to post misinformation to make that point.

There is nothing dishonest with my argument. It was concise and factual.

Tense is your friend when using the English language. Your statement seems to collaborate mine...you just seem not to realize it because you were so intent upon taking a cheap shot at me (and now cannot back away from it).

As I noted, SF did eliminate cash bail, they did eliminate the use of facial recognition to catch criminals, and they pretty much banned guns for the self-defense of private, law-abiding citizens. While you may believe SF laws much like the rest of CA (so normal and reasonable) ...I would contend that it is awfully difficult to buy and carry a weapon in CA cities (and especially in SF) as compared to most of the country.

There is no misinformation in my post...but nice try.
