You had me at "steel guitar solo"

Dave Alvin once said that Dwight Yoakum bought him a Porsche when he agreed to cover this song.

I posted this while back on "what are you listening to" thread, but, one does not simply sing a Steve Winwood cover.
I'm Ron, and this other Ron does it well. Low budget, in his basement as a hobby, adding guitar overdubs like another Ron I know, but most importantly, he brings a new element to the song. At the time, he really was "Near the end" He passed away relatively soon thereafter. It was his swansong.

That's a great version. Sounds a bit like Gordon Lightfoot. RIP Ron.

I like this guy Tony Clef. He records in his room, great acoustic covers. This is an early one..

Margo said that song paid for her house.

“Songs of the Recollection” is all covers I believe. My favorite is a cover of "The Way I Feel," a Gordon Lightfoot song. Their cover sounds so different (and much better than the original):

Speaking of Margo, this version of Supernatural written by Vic Chesnutt is beautiful and haunting, something the CJ's do effortlessly

As already mentioned, Hurt done by Johnny Cash
Woodstock - done my CSNY

By Grateful Dead:
I Know You Rider
Iko Iko
Mama Tried
Me and My Uncle
Not Fade Away/Goin Down the Road Feelin Bad

and, a bunch of songs that Led Zeppelin claims as theirs (but that is another thread for a different day)

Steve Carlton 09-11-2024 08:12 PM

One of the most beautiful songs ever. Neil got everything out of it.

Not the first Leonard Cohen song here, and possibly not the last. Dude was like Bob Dylan, a great songwriter but not a greater singer...

Johnette adds a whole heaping pile of viciousness to this song

That whole record is amazing, the Five Years is killer.

My favorite Margo story-at a small club show in West Chester Pa in the early 90's a buddy and myself were in the merch line talking to Margo, and he says, tongue in cheek, "Trinity Sessions changed my life". Margo burst out laughing and said "Mine too!".
Damn near totaled my m5 in freak snow shower on the way home on the Pa tpk.

Gordon Lightfoot was one of the finest folk song writers of my life, but to my ears his singing was lifeless and boring. Tony Rice often did fantastic covers of his songs.

Other than just about any cover of just about any Bob Dylan song, I think Elephant Revival did a great job with this. Plus, Bonnie is cuter than a speckled pup.

I would like to hear some more of Rice's covers, thanks for mentioning him. I think he missed the mark with this one though. Ten Degrees and Getting Colder is a melancholy song about a guy down on his luck. This upbeat, plinking banjo music just doesn't fit the lyrics.

Here's another Gordon Lightfoot cover by Tony Rice (and a stellar band that includes Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck)

It's definitely an upbeat take on this song.
