The MB reliability issue that you reference actually is mostly part of the new generation of ABC (and I guess Airmatic) suspensions that MB employed in the E-Class and S-Class. If you followed MB's recommended service, you did not have issues, but owners thought they were smarter than the manufacturer and pushed their cars ignoring the service intervals. This led to sometimes catastrophic failures and VERY costly repairs which were sensationalized online on forums and YouTubers looking for "clicks", and owners with a "woe is me" attitude.

Simple if you cannot afford a new S-Class for $150k new in the early 2000s, what makes you think that buying a 15-year old one for $10k is not going to nickel and dime you?

During this time, MB did not have any engine issues except a few cases with their odd 5.8L V12 that replaced the bullet proof M120 V12, but again mostly sensationalized. Transmissions have always been bullet proof even when neglected.
On paper it was a joint venture but in reality MB sucked the $4+ billion from Chrysler and stifled any new products from them including the ME412 then dropped them when the money ran out.

I dunno slow & rusty...if MB cars were super reliable for the majority of people who just follow recommended 'service' intervals the values wouldn't fall off a cliff like they do. and at some point it stops being 'service' and is really replacing poorly engineered parts.

????

Not my experience at all. I do the recommended maintenance on my MBZs and after 150,000 miles (about 9-10 years) trade them in and get newer models.

Never had an expensive repair.

I watched a show a while back were a MB had a million or so miles on it. The owner followed the maintenance to the T and the car was basically rebuilt many times over at an exorbitant cost.
I really didn't see the point of it.

It was a “merger of equals.”

styling is boring, we are looking at cars as a 3rd one is necessary,I considered Nissan, but instead thiking 2006-7 ish cayman.
i own a Honda Element, which ia a cult car, mine has 186000 on it and is barely broken in, 300k is common, and it is so versatile Ill likely keep it a long time , I had a 78 Nissan Z which was fun, but replaced it with an 80 911 targa..Much better..

All cars depreciate sharply.

Even my Lexus LX570 which is supposedly near recession proof that I bought as a CPO from Lexus when it was 2 years old with 20k miles has depreciated $15K in one year. This depreciated value was actually calculated by Lexus recently, not some online source.

Depreciation is a game a lot of dealers play to sell widgets.
When you buy a car it's a seller's market
You sell a car a car it's a buyer's market.

Buying a Benz beyond 8-years old can be a gamble if and only if the owner has not stayed up with the recommended maintenance.

My wife and I own quite a few MBs, and I am very good at maintaining them or taking them to the dealer for things beyond my capability. They have been great to own. The older stuff from the '80s is incredible.

They seem to be in the " hanging on " category . They have been fairly heavy with TV promotions with Rashida Jones as the spokes person . Not sure what their market share is but it can't be much .

Stellantis is a massive pile of crap. I'm working on a project for them, they are re-using 'stuff' that Ford or GM would have tossed twenty years ago. It's pathetic how underfunded they are.

I’ll avoid an Altima or Sentra in the rental car lot right up there with a Malibu. Infiniti products are better but feel about a decade behind other luxury makes. When you don’t invest in competitive products, eventually the consumer moves on.
