Since I share the same city as JYL, I am walking in muddy puddles 6-8 months of the year. I have gravitated to waterproof low rise hiking boots. The ones that are not a heavy duty hiker but based off an athletic shoe. I was hardcore Keen but they lost my business when two consecutively failed me. Now I use Solomon. Fit is amazing. Bought some for my wife as well. Not particularly inexpensive but they get worn every day and my feet are happy.

Glen, I can tell you for a fact that WE are not their target demographic! The only shoes I’ll pay over $100 for are Johnston & Murphy that I wear daily for work. Because I spend a lot of time walking and in hangars, I tend to wear out cheap dress shoes really quickly.

I've always called them "tennis shoes" or "sneakers". I don't think I've ever called them "trainers" or anything else. I don't think I've ever paid more than $100 for tennis shoes. I've always been able to get Vibram Five Finger's shoes on sale/clearance. The only thing that I've ever paid more for is dress shoes or Merrel water proof, ankle high, hiking boots. And even then, I've found them on sale somewhere.

I like a nice big toe box.
These are my go-to.

My shoe tastes change all the time but the last couple years I've been wearing Salomon hiking shoes as my serious get stuff done shoes. I'm pretty tall tho so I prefer flat tennis/walking shoes for everything not requiring a tough shoe like the Salomon. For that shoe I've been wearing Ecco or Cole Haan.

I bought a pair of Koio tennis shoes earlier this year and I'm liking them. They're more of dressy tennis shoe so more for going out to dinner and such. The leather is pretty stiff so it's taking a while to break them in.

You guys don’t have the spirit I’m looking for. You’re all a bunch of practical poopheads.

I’d spend $100 on some OG Adidas Country sneaks, green/white, like what I ran XC with in high school. I would not spend $700 on original made-in-France Country sneakers.

I have poor peoples feet. I wear Converse All Stars. Yes, old school Chuck Taylors. They are light and they feel good. Currently I have black high tops for every day and red high tops for when I am Stylin'.

The most expensive sneakers I've bought are these Nike Air Monarch's for $120
Bought them new off Ebay and wore them once. They are size 10 and too narrow.
Only size he had....I thought I could make them work, should have passed and waited for a wider width.

I'm an Allbirds fan. But I only walk in them. No running. Folks who run swear by Hoka. Recently folks gravitate towards On, but only if you like that look and don't mind pebbles getting into those holes.

Where is Rod Serling .... I still can't believe this is a "thing" ... I'd pay $2000 for plain white Nikes with a subtle black whoosh tho' ...

Sneakerheads .... LOL

The definitive "godfather" "granddad" "guru" of sneaker design is probably a member here. His name is Steve Smith, and has worked as essentially head of design for every sneaker manufacturer out there and started it all with New Balance and the biggest "dad" shoe of all time back in 1986.

He races a vintage VW Beetle, and has a 356 coupe and a Speedster as i recall as well (could be more....)

https://www.avants.com/podcast/2022/5/22/steven-smith-from-dad-shoes-to-yeezys-to-porsches-and-everything-between

I've got more shoes than any woman I've ever met... but most of the time wear Vessi (similar to AllBirds) as the are waterproof and comfortable as I've broken a few bones in my feet over the years.
