I use Wagos and pigtails for everything, if you pre-plan and pre-bend a little, they sit flatter and can take up less space than wire nuts.
And the pushing into the box trick is usually the handle of a hammer, but a screwdriver works almost as well if the bottom is flat. Our house is from the 60s, so lots of tight metal boxes. I've had to remove a few by cutting the nails with a multitool and putting in a remodel box. Often the extra room and ease to get it back together makes up for the time taken to cut it out if you go that way from the beginning vs fighting for 10 minutes and then switching tactics.

Interesting you use 12ga wire for residential light circuits down there. As others have said, install a larger box would be the proper way.
