Holy Smokes Apple made a mess out of Airpods!

Since IOS 18 airpods have been glitching. First CRAZY LOUD ringtone to now no ringtone and now Siri announcing calls or asking if I want to answer the call.

I wear my airpods when mowing, working on vehicles or anything else where having my phone readily available is inconvenient. Since IOS 18.1 I've had problems with Siri and calls in general. I used to get Siri asking if I'd like to accept a call but that's gone. I'd also get my incoming ringtone but that's gone. All I get on calls now is the phone vibrating. Kinda sucks when I use my airpods a lot for calls. Haven't checked to see if it messed with anything on my watch yet! It has me to the point I'm charging my Galaxy Buds to see if they work any better.

I love the noise cancelling, transparency mode etc. I also like the new hearing aid functions for airpods but it needs refined (the hearing test can be a royal P.I.T.A to complete btw)

I've gone through all the settings and finally resigned myself to the fact that Apple is going to have to fix this problem because I've gone through notification settings, accessibility settings, volume settings for everything.. no fix. How much do ya suppose Apple will pay me for helping to troubleshoot their problem?

That sucks. Sometimes crap happens on a big upgrade, but that sounds especially nasty since it seems to have affected the primary function of them in multiple ways.

I have all of my devices set to "download only" and then install when I feel like it. It could be days or weeks before I upgrade. Sometimes, I'll even research an update before I allow it, but that's not always fool-proof in figuring out if you're going to have problems or not.

I am not suggesting this because it sounds like a huge PITA, but I wonder about doing a "factory reset". It wouldn't surprise me if that fixed the issue, but it may not.

I did a reset on the Airpods hoping that might help. I thought maybe the firmware that updated on the airpods with IOS 18.1 and forward might have had a problem so I gave that a try. I really don't want to go through the hoops of doing a full reset on my phone so I'm just gonna hope Apple fixes the problem or someone smarter than me finds a fix and posts it on the Apple support site.

Right, I don't have AP, but figured they had their own code. I was thinking that it seems most likely that the issue was on the phone side, but you never know. Hopefully, an update comes out that fixes it.

I assume you also "unpaired" or whatever the process is that has the AP talk to the phone, and then repaired?

Yeah, I made the mistake of upgrading to 18.3 then my Carplay stopped working. I had to reset everything but got it back. Now I see my watch isn't passing notifications...

I'm sure an update will fix it all

I just listen to podcasts with ear buds. So....$9.99 bluetooth buds from Amazonia will get me a pair that works with my iPhone and last until they don't; then it's time for a new, improved set. The ones I have now I bought 2 years ago, still working great and sound fine (for my needs).

Yep, just one of the reasons I hold on to my old phones.
Perfectly content wirh corded headphones. Plus I like being able to plug into audio jacks on equipment.

Good to know. I'm on 18.1.1 and doing OK. I'll wait for a bit before I allow any upgrades.

Which AirPods? Mine have been fine the whole time.
CarPlay in both vehicles also hasn’t been an issue.

I haven't had a problem with Carplay. Are you using wireless carplay or wired? My 22 Rav only supports wired carplay. I haven't been in my other vehicle that has wireless carplay.

Airpods Pro 2. I haven't tried my Galaxy Buds yet and don't have any of the older model Airpods handy.

Yep! I did a full factory reset on the airpods, deleted and paired, power cycled the phone etc.

I have AirPos Pro, am on 18.3 and I am not experiencing any of the problems that the OP detailed. And wireless Carplay works just fine.

Mine are the Pro 2's. My brother and I have the same model AP's both of us were running 18.2 and having issues. I updated to 18.3 but told him to wait to see if that fixed the problem, it didn't.

I've read several threads stating that the first gen aren't experiencing the problem. I don't know what the differences are between Gen 1 and Gen 2. Are the 3048's newer? Mine are 2698's. I haven't asked my brother what model his are.

Edit: Got a chance to look. Yours are newer than mine. Gonna have to ask my brother what model he has. It's funny, my youngest child doesn't use her airpods for much more than listening to music whereas I use mine for about everything they're capable of doing. I'll have to ask her what model hers are and how they're working with her iPhone 16.

My kids have new new ones - Xmas this year - and they too have had no issues.
My wife has the first model pro - lightning charger - and no problems either.

Wonder if it’s a iPhone 16 vs 15 deal. We are all running 15 pros.

Mine are the early model with lightening charger. My brother has the newer model with type C charger. He's having the same problem but I'm not sure what phone he has. I'll ask him today. I'll have to wait until this weekend when my youngest gets home to see how hers are working.

The problem could be related to my brother and I both doing a hearing test and then using the airpods as hearing aids. I'm not using them out of need but it is nice to be able to hear better in certain situations.

Siri announces text messages, missed calls and responds to commands such as call, text, switching modes from transparency to ANC. When I receive a call my phone vibrates but there's no ringtone in the airpods and Siri no longer tells me who is calling or asks if I want to answer the call.

FINALLY... I ended up going into settings and turning on "add audio in calls. This feature allows audio from apps. I now have Siri back in my ears when a call comes in. IOS 18.2 & 18.3 must have made this feature an on/off option

One of many things that I hate about Apple updates are when they add a “feature”, don’t tell you about it, and then default it to on. So you update and all hell breaks loose and you don’t know why.

I’ve been fighting issues with our family all being on the same Apple ID. For a while I was getting my daughter’s call history on my phone, now I seem to be getting my son’s contacts merging with mine. All of the iCloud backup/sync, calls on other devices, and family sharing is disabled. I’ve read that Apple wants everybody to have their own individual iCloud and stop sharing them across families, which is just another PITA that I don’t want to deal with.

Nice. Interesting. Maybe an upgrade flipped the setting or something.
