That’s what I read. It’s not even like a car hitting a car parked on the side of the road. There’s a huge fricking ocean and the cargo ship hit the tanker. WTF.

I don't know about these guys, but it's well known that ship's crews are often drunk.

I can only assume that company A tracks its ships, and company B tracks its ships, but maybe there's no central agency that tracks all ships (no ATC analog for the ocean).

I wonder what sort of radar these ships have if any.
In Canada, there is a ‘central agency’ that tracks ships near our ports. For instance there is Vancouver Traffic and also Tofino Traffic. I think on channel 73 iirc. I’m sure the UK has something very similar.

When I was shrimp trawling in Trevor Channel on the west coast of Vancouver Island, I had several interactions with Tofino traffic if a lumber ship was going to be a problem for me (we had right of way as commercial fishermen with limited steering). I had to get ships to alter course at least once a week and unless I called Tofino traffic, they generally ignored me. Usually Tofino traffic would advise the pilots that small commercial fishing vessels were active in the area and to remain well clear.

Yes, ships often have radar and the larger ones are all equipped with AIS, which is like a transponder for ships that transmits and receives position and other basic information. They can have more advanced monitoring systems depending on the ship and carrier. This seems like another gross negligence accident that shouldn’t have happened.

In our little Cessna 182T we have ADS-B that in usually the display on the right panel.

It shows us every aircraft in class B airspace. Even airlines flying at 40,000 feet above us. If anything gets within a mile, the ADS-B starts a verbal warning. Of course we were watching it anyway.

It is just astonishing that the US Navy with a mega million dollar helicopter and an airline can collide, or that a huge ocean going vessel can run into a anchored ship. I honstly don't understand how they don't have systems far superior to our little Cessna to avoid collisions.

I just read an article that states the military helicopter involved in the Potomac tragedy had their ADS-B turned off . I am no expert but a safety feature in the off position isn't of much use . Could a similar scenario have taken place with this ship collision ? Time will tell .

That was likely the case in the incident with the aircraft carrier a few weeks ago, as Navy ships may not want to advertise their location to the world.

No excuse for plotting a course through an anchorage, in my opinion.
