Can't imagine how something like this is possible. Oil tankers and Cargo ships are not small or fast moving. Seems there should be awareness of each other's proximity with lots of time to adjust course, even slightly.

And in this day with everything being tracked with GPS, how does this kind of thing happen?

You would sure think, wouldn't you.
I think the North Sea can be very rough. Maybe that contributes to poor visibility.

I can only assume that company A tracks its ships, and company B tracks its ships, but maybe there's no central agency that tracks all ships (no ATC analog for the ocean).

I wonder what sort of radar these ships have if any.

This is insane. I can understand planes crashing into each other, but ships?

Too much reliance on technology rather than old fashioned seamanship.

Anyway, in the world, something will always happen...

Human error, or human hubris.
A few years ago a captain ran a tanker aground off the English coast. The charts said he couldn't get through between an island and the mainland, he thought he could.
He couldn't.

They have plenty of technology. Radar, tracking, the works.

Watched a break down of this this morning. The tanker was anchored off the Humber river. The freighter had left the Forth river and was proceeding at 16 knots along the course she usually traveled. Probably on autopilot with no one on watch.
Someone needs their masters ticket revoked.

So it wasn't like the two drove into each other. The tanker was "parked" and the other plowed into it. Easy to understand since tankers are so small.
autopilot with no one watching? Yikes

A couple weeks ago one of our aircraft carriers was involved in a similar collision near an anchorage at one end of the Suez canal.

Hard to believe that stupid **** like this can occur in this day and age.
