i often replace treble hooks for a single.

for bass and walleye and pike etc, i prefer a circle hook of appropriate size

anytime you can reduce the difficulty in getting hooks out, you mitigate risk of getting yourself or the kids hooked. i had a walleye shake his head while unhooking and the hook got into my hand…and he kept shaking until it was out of him but still in my hand…off to the ER as I could not get it out because of the barbs

it’s also better for the fish

probably too young for the lesson but trying to instill a level of ethical behavior when engaging in catch and release fishing is a worthy cause i think

if catching to eat, different story

any questions or tips about anything, fire away

100% agree. I was surprised when it didn't bother them that the fish were being hooked. I assume that they had watched enough videos where they either didn't realize what was going on or just thought it wasn't a big deal.

OK, so you're pro single hooks, OK.

Yeah, off to ER to remove a hook sounds like a PITA at the very least.

If you are lucky.

Couldnt do that with mine since hook was pushed up against bone

without a nerve block i wasnt gonna twist it around.....if out in the wilderness, yea i would have

if you get a hook in the top of the arm or back or something, no problem. cut shank and push

which raises another tip, always have good sharp side cutters in your bag of tools

Talking about dangerous fish hooks. Yikes. Fly fishing on a windy day and feeling the fly clip your ear as it goes past.

The kids are probably not that focused on actually catching fish they just want the fun of being out with their grandad fishing.

I know when I was a little boy I dreamt for years of being taken out fishing.

I saw this in Mexico. dude took a treble hook right below the shoulder blade in his back. they cut it too short, and we had no leverage to twist it completely thru. I asked the guy, "Can I try?"

he let me. I introduced myself and told him since we technically are not friends I was going to go for it. I used my need nose pliers. I failed. the human back skin is TOUGH!! the bad mofo, never flinched. I put a coke bottle cup over and it taped it in. he went to a doc the next day. I asked.."did the doctor have a bunch of dogs and cats in cages?" hahhaha...

A few of us were chillin at my cabin drinking beer when these kids came by for help. A teenage kid somehow got attached to a lure like that. A treble hook, all sunk past the barbs in the thumb, fore finger and middle finger pinning all 3 together. He was shaking. I tried the poke through the skin and clip thing but there was no way, too painful. I snipped the fingers free with some dikes, gave him a stick to bite down on and yanked quickly with the pliers. Ready for the next? Yes, just do it! he said through clenched teeth. I needed another beer after that. I'm sure he would've chugged one down too but he was too young to give a beer to.

same Mexico trip, I put one into the top of my hand. I just grabbed it with needle nose pliers and push opposite of the barb and yanked. all good. I washed it back at the lodge and had no issues. tiny scar for my stupidity. the treble was thankfully tiny.

Now you guys tell me. I've been trying to figure out how to remove the nymphs after multiple failed "false casts".

My face was starting to look like the inside of one of my fly boxes.
