Herta's 2nd run was very impressive. Go out and flip and wreck a car, then go back out a few hours later in a hastily prepped backup having no idea how it's going to handle and lay down 4 consistent laps to make it into the field. Nerves of steel.

Good thing he still has Uber (if you know the Paul Tracy quote)

Did Tracy make the field?

Gotta fit in the car, first.

Lol. 100%
P.T. was great for the broadcast team and then disappeared. Anyone know why?

CurtEgerer 05-18-2025 03:26 PM

^^^ He raced in the Trans-Am race this year at Sebring.

Coolest livery in the field fails to qualify! The retro 'spin and win' Miller High Life car.

URY914 05-18-2025 05:25 PM

A rookie takes the pole!

And Maco makes the field. ;)

A very international field.

CurtEgerer 05-18-2025 07:50 PM

Story of the day had to be Penske caught 'cheating' - both cars out of qualifying  So did they run the cars that way yesterday or did someone get creative and modify them last night?

I thought for sure Rosenqvist was going to lay down a 234 at the end. Not to be.

And they say that miracles don't happen in the 21st century!
Maybe there is one more to come and someone gets their 5th Indy 500 win?

Other thoughts:
-It was fun to see Taco go for it (as always).
-Penke has had a few screw-ups lately but as much as they like Pole Position, its not how you start but how you end up. 7-9th starting is very doable.

Scott Douglas 05-19-2025 07:42 AM

Yeah, on the Penske 'cheating', why weren't they pushed all the way back to the rear of the grid?

Must help to own the circuit when arguing your innocent :D

Definitely a rogue junior mechanic ;)

Prema are a serious competitor with lots of racing experience, just not Indycar, will be interesting to see what the team can do on race day

It was cheating, they filled in gaps which is a no-no in a Indycar. Not sure about the #3.

Super embarrassing for the (other) Captain.

3rd_gear_Ted 05-19-2025 08:32 AM

Italian team comes along and takes a static old design to a new level.

No doubt it was cheating.

Yes, embarrassing for the Capt. but not as embarrassing as it was for Cindrick who had to answer to it on live TV. He knew about it from the get go, I believe, and pulled the other car out before it was questioned.

Didn't they have to go thru tech inspection before they ran their qualifying laps?

URY914 05-19-2025 10:08 AM

Cindrick was dancing all around the issue in the interview.

CurtEgerer 05-19-2025 11:10 AM

Well, the 2 DQ'd Penskes will now start 32nd and 33rd.

CurtEgerer 05-19-2025 11:19 AM

Yes, the cars passed tech for Q1 but nobody really knows if the filler was on the attenuator or not at that time. Probably, but likely not something they would pay much attention to. A very, very small modification but when you're dealing with 1000ths of a second, it could make a difference.

Plus $100k fine each, loss of qually points, and pit box selection.

greglepore 05-19-2025 12:23 PM

2nd year in a row Tim's had to stand down from the 500 due to a "cheating" issue.
IDK whether they knew prior to be called on it that it was not permitted. They massage a lot of gaps for Indy. Yes, the rule is clear, but in retrospect.
Odd that Scotty Mac's trashed car didn't have that area faired.

Billiam 911 2.8 05-19-2025 02:02 PM

So who will take the fall? Roger does not like being embarrassed. Firing the alleged rogue junior mechanic is too easy. The buck really stops with Cindrick.

Or Ron. But yeah, its not a good look.
Kudos to the series for doing the right thing today and setting Josef and Will at the back.
Josef is going to get a reputation as well...
