Small towns have too many people

Our village where I live in the UK was invaded by Viking's in 913AD, population in the 1086 Domesday book was recorded at 76, village has grown a lot, population must be 2500 now, easily up by 500 since we moved here nearly 30yrs ago

We've recently decided we won't move as it has everything we need ie village shop, post office, brewery, pubs, doctors, dentist, garage, vets, pop up pizza, fish and chips and Thai food vans different nights of the week, classic car club, sports facilities, regular bus service to nearby towns

Our other village in Slovenia is a farming village, very rustic but that's part of the charm of living there, has a population of maybe 700 at the most and goes back in records a 1000yrs

I'm definitely a country mouse!

The village where we live (can't call it a town, populaton<2K) has a post office, food store, two restaurants, & a feed & hay store. Most of the working people leave during the day & return at the end. We like it that way. The only mildly negative is that there are more people coming through with their adventure vans and hiking around the area. We're all trying to stay incognito as much as possible.

Maybe for you it wasn't a problem.

I have never lived in a small town or city. (except for a few college years living in apts/houses with roommates)

Both my wife and I have always lived in rural areas our whole youth and adult lives. That said.. I like visiting small towns but absolutely detest cities and could NEVER live in one. I get pissed every rare occasion when having to drive through city traffic. We live within about 10 minutes of a couple small towns and about 20-30 minutes of some larger towns with hospitals and chain stores/restaurants. About 40 minutes to a decent sized city (Toledo).

I can't imagine not being able to ride dirt bikes, snowmobiles, atvs, fly rc and real planes, shoot guns etc on my property. My lifelong interests just do not work living in urban areas.

Tim, like you we are almost mid way between two small towns. The nearest house to ours is about a quarter mile. It's about a two minute saunter to the river (which is a semi tidal headpond here) where I keep a small boat. My wife has her equines. We grow our own hay and most of her gardens are for vegetables.
Remember the old definition::
If you stand on your front step in your underwear and no one can see you, that's rural.
If you stand on your front step in your underwear and someone calls the cops, that's suburban.
It you stand on your front step in your underwear and no one cares, that's urban.

turns out most people mistake size of towns, with size of communities.

We have one of the best facilities in the midwest 20 minutes from our house. The towns we live between are 1200, 2000, and 900 people.

I can walk into the local store, get a bottle of local wine, local cheese curds that still squeak, grade 8 bolts and a transformer for an electric fence and some synthetic oil and filter for the car. Get a rotisserie chicken and some cole slaw while I am there and is only 2.5 miles via highway. As stated though, it is not a quick trip in when you get stuck talking to everyone.
