I mounted my umbrella to an aluminum plate, and then mounted the plate to the end of my 50 ft. dock. The wind still found it's weakest link and created havoc.
They need to be taken down when you have forecasted heavy winds.

I made this patio umbrella stand about 20 years ago.
It stays outdoors all year long. Made it from scrap 2205 stainless steel that I had laying around from a water treatment plant project. The plate is 1" x 12" x 12" and the pipe is 1 1/2" . Probably weighs around 50 lbs.
