Shake shack youngster rant

I must be getting old if I’m calling kids youngsters and caring about this crap

Anyway, finally went to a Shake Shack yesterday. 2 cheese burgers, 2 fries, 2 small shakes….$50! But that’s not my rant

I went to the cashier to order and a young girl maybe 18 with a full gold grill in her mouth takes the order well enough I guess but then when the tip screen came up on the CC machine, she says you can put a tip on your credit card and the tip will automatically be split between all my co-workers but if you pay the tip in cash, it will only go to me.

Whoa….

I pondered this while I sat there eating, wondering if her friends knew she was trying to keep all the tips for herself with each transaction even though she was just standing there pushing buttons while everyone else was working the grill, bringing the food out to tables, cleaning tables etc…

In the end, the only thing good I could come up with about this youngster is, at least she is working

…I also wondered how all the college students sitting around us could possibly afford to eat at this place

crazy sheiße.

I wonder if they all do it. Was there a "tip jar" or something for you to put cash in, or were you going to have to just hand it to her?

KFC911 05-08-2025 12:12 PM

I'm wondering how anyone can afford to eat there!

Sooo...

How much did you tip....

$15 :D

herr_oberst 05-08-2025 12:14 PM

I'm not proud of myself for these thoughts in my head sometimes, but the solution is simple enough to me in this tip-crazy world we live in.

Those "tip jars" are the reason the penny should never be discontinued ;)

Every time they show the tip screen....it's more than I want to tip.(fast food)

I automatically click on custom and change it to a buck or two...that's it for a hamburger and drink.

Tobra 05-08-2025 12:19 PM

I would never consider a tip for a fast food place

I'll know now who leaves those pennies.:D

How much do you leave at KFC?

.

ramonesfreak 05-08-2025 12:20 PM

No tip jar. I don’t carry cash. I left a 10% tip on the card.

I never do. Maybe it was her gold teeth and the comment about cash that dazed me and in a moment of weakness I tipped. Last time

For fast food. Why?

Scott Douglas 05-08-2025 01:32 PM

IDK. A lapse in my usual protocol.

Reminded me of a guy I used to work with who always gave a tip when picking up lunch to go and bring back to the office. One day he was paying but I went to pick it up. He asked me how much tip did I leave when I handed him his change? I said huh, why would I tip for take out food? Then we spent our lunch hour arguing why it is ok to not tip the person that hands you a bag of food through a window. He said because the person spent time putting the food in the bag. I said how do you know exactly who put the food in the bag? He then went through the office taking a pole of how many of our co-workers leave tips when picking up food to go. I was shocked at how many people said, oh yes always. Was I in the wrong here?

KFC911 05-08-2025 02:28 PM

Nope ... tipping someone handing food through a window ain't happening.

I'm waiting for that rant about a burger, fries, & shake costing $25 bucks now...

+ TIP :D

edit: If I'm picking up food and the person who hands it to me has packaged it, etc. yes... I'll tip them for sure!

Shake shack has always been the pricier of fast food joints but my daughter put herself through college working there. She’s over $20 an hour including tips and only this last semester has she cut her schedule to less than 30 hours.

So thank you everyone for helping support her.

this just applied to my life.

I have 3 of my team going away for almost a year training. I will miss the young engineers. they had great energy. super welcomed in my aging team.

anyways. I made a huge vat of homemade meatballs, and ordered 4 large pizzas from a local place. they open at 11:00, but I called and they said they will have everything ready for me as soon as they open. they would build my pies early. I paid them over the phone.

well, I woke up with flu like symptoms. I called another supervisor and he ran with it. got the pizza picked up. said nice things, everyone ate, except my vat of meatballs stayed home. I had drinks in my office.

today, I went to work and asked. anyone tip the pizza place?. NOPE! I went back and explained the situation and left a proper tip. they hooked me up. plates, forks, etc. did the stuff early.

I dont mind usually. shake shack? prob not. we order at a kiosk. and to this day, I cant figure out how to get two patties of meat but only ONE SLICE of cheese. it is not possible at the Kiosk. been about a year.

(my wife took the meatballs to a picnic at her work. Nurse week celebration. she came off like a hero. hahahaha)

Arizona_928 05-08-2025 03:06 PM

I just don’t tip. Makes life simple

That's because you're a decent person. I always suspected.
