Ballard better than Bosch....

in one way...her Toyota FJ60 is so dang cool. way better than Bosch's 90's Jeep Cherokee.

that little 4x4 makes me almost want to clear a big hole in my garage and start the search...

I think that it's an FJ62, dual rectangular headlights and an automatic. I agree, though, that car is an essential character in the show. And she is beautiful.

Couldn't get past Ep.1. I'll try again this weekend. But yes, the Toyota is cool.

Let's just say I wasn't hooked. I got as far as the two politicians(?) berating her about a case that was personal to the main guy. Too much talk.

Nice bait n' switch ;- ) it's not as good, but overall it's a good show and Harry + others appear eventually.. I wish they kept Bosch going, but it's something...

For some reason, after the original ended, I couldn't get hooked on the Legacy series.

I agree. And the more I watched the Legacy series, the less I liked his daughter. I haven’t bothered to watch Ballard, but I might check out the first episode.

Ballard is not as great as Bosch, which was really exceptional, IMO but it's still pretty good TV. She sells the character pretty well, which is based on an actual female LAPD detective named Mitzi Roberts who worked cold cases. Roberts worked as a consultant on Bosch and appeared briefly in a couple of early episodes. Connelly was inspired by her to create the character of Ballard.

A buddy in my off roading club has the lexus version of the 60 and it's a beast. Not much for looking at, but locked front and rear and goes most anywhere he points it...

That's a killer rig but not a version of the FJ60...Lexus was not even a twinkle in Toyota's eye when the FJ60 was produced. Well, maybe a twinkle but that is a 90/100 series late '90s SUV.

FJ60 was approx. 1980-'87 and FJ62, (what she drives in the show), was only 1988-'89. They are basically identical except for headlights/grille and the FJ60 was a manual transmission vs. automatic in the FJ62. Interestingly, there was no transmission option in either.

I was an auto broker in the late '80s and I remember brand new FJ60s running $20k.

That's an 80 series Land Cruiser in the pics above, not a 100. I have both.

Don't forget, FJ62 also has larger motorized side mirrors, another giveaway on the difference between the 60 and it's smaller manual mirrors.

Started watching last night. About 4 episodes in.

Seems way more melodramatic than Bosch, to me. I like that there's some surfing!

Will continue watching before giving more opinion.

I also think Bosch had better supporting characters. Not the least of which was Coltrane!

In 1988 I moved to Maryland and looked at FJ60s...I almost pulled the trigger on a white one, not sure of the diff set-ups, $24K if I remember correctly.

I was a second tour LT and while I could afford it, I wasn't sure I was going to stay in the service at that time so I waved off...I wanted zero debt going into the "should I stay or should I go" debate.
