Wide brim hats that don’t look dorky

My doctor tells me that I need to start wearing wide brim hats. I’ve been wearing trucker hats since I was able to put one on.

Most bucket hats look stupid. I don’t want to look like Tim the Toolman Taylor’s neighbour. I also don’t want to look like I’m pretending to be on a safari.

One option is a cowboy hat… lots of citiots wear these tho. I don’t want to look like a dime store cowboy.

What do you guys wear?

KFC911 09-01-2025 11:00 AM

I'm out then...

Doesn't matter on my head :D

Paul T 09-01-2025 11:15 AM

I wear trucker hats when I need a hat, but generally I hate having anything on my head. Buckets hats just are what they are IMO….functional, but yeah, they aren’t gonna look good.

Dixie 09-01-2025 11:27 AM

Cowboy hat. You can get 'em with, without, or varying amount,of roll to the brim.

^^^ I agree . That's what I wear when mowing the yard.

KFC911 09-01-2025 11:51 AM

I've got two (now) of the stiff wide brim up front and the floppy around the back ... soak 'em in hot weather ...

No 'effen way could I do a coboy hat, etc. that doesn't breath. I didn't start wearing even a ball cap until I was mid-40s ... always in the sun :(.

Got mine at ??? ... TS, Lowes, etc. tried one, grabbed another one later ... 20-25 bucks.

Should have done it over 5 decades ago ... live & learn :D

While working in Australia, I fell in love with Akubra hats. Kind of like the Stetson of Australia. Look them up.

Tilley makes lots of brimmed hats with various widths of brim and in various styles and colors.
The "airflo" models have mesh around the top edge to help keep you cool

I vote cowboy hat for least dorky. Or a straw one if you’re sitting on the beach at a tiki bar.

Baz got it right. Not dorky and poseur like a cowboy hat - assuming you’re not a cowboy.

As a rancher that has cattle (and pulled a calf 4 days ago), I’m probably more ‘cowboy’ than most.

Define ‘cowboy’.

When sailing .... I prefer a coboy hat ... and boots!

I get strange looks at marinas ... but I'm used to that too :D

Hats that wont blow off ... matter ;)

UB, you definitely need a coboy hat ... you sir, are a REAL coboy... and a pimp hat is not for you either :)

I’ve got one of these Volcom straw hats for working in the yard or being down at the beach. It’s got a nice elastic band that holds in place. I bought a Volcom because I’m a poseur (can’t surf)

That’s not me. Could take a picture of my hat showing half my face but, this is better.

Dixie 09-01-2025 02:44 PM

Cowboy hats come in various materials, and countless shapes. There's no reason anyone can't find one that's practical, and flattering.

All hat no cattle

I live in Oregon. Or, "The West" you might say. There are few people who can wear a western hat and get away with it. Unclebilly might. Not sure.

If you look at the styles posted by Dixie, I see Stevie Ray Vaughn; the Large Guy from Bonanza; the Bad Guy from Clint Eastwood Westerns; and then a bunch of people I might just make fun of. (sorry, you asked. I am not always a nice person.)

I like the straw options above. I have a hat made by Columbia, but it is too darn floppy. No brim coverage. Have another I got on Amazon, too rigid and thick. Makes me sweat. My default is a green UO ball cap - not a lot of coverage there, I know.

Good luck. Show us what you pick.

KFC911 09-01-2025 03:09 PM

^^^^ Yep .... coboy hats around here and in Florida ... scream country music poseur :(.

Nobody wears 'em ...

I have one wide brimmed hat that I wear when not pretending to be a coboy during Stampede Week..
Wallaroo Hat Company Carkella Parker. It wasn't cheap but I do like the hat.
Side story to the purchase. I had won a golf trip a couple of years ago that came with spending money for in the pro shop and restaurants at the resort. I burnt the spending money and ended up with this hat.
It was way too expensive to use as a yard hat but it is a very nice fit. I might look a little dorky in it... lol.

911boost 09-01-2025 04:23 PM

I have about 4 different Tilly’s I’ve collected over the years. That is typically what i wear working outside.

I also have a Stetson Mountain Sky that is wool and not too cowboy. I really like how it fits and looks.

I’d say wear whatever you like, F it, i am past caring what anyone thinks besides my family.

rockfan4 09-01-2025 04:38 PM

I ended up buying a Resistol Kingman hat. This is not me. I'm by no means a cowboy, but as the wife seems committed to getting a horse, I've started learning to do ground work with horses. I've found it works a lot better if they can see your eyes, see your intent. So the hat and no sunglasses works better than a ball cap and sunglasses. The wife says I look good in it, but she may be biased.

I would have rather found one like this. Slightly smaller brim and a crown more to my liking. This is the Resistol Big Spender. I might buy one when the other one wears out or a horse eats it.

Don't wear hats, almost ever but the one or twice a year out camping or something. Couple years ago, I was at Air / water show, the hat save my face from getting burn. Mine is from Columbia with the limp brim after stuffing it into my bag on a flight for 5 hours. Keeps the sun off my eyes. Breath very well. I don't know that I look dorky but I can't see myself.

whys is it that women always get away with looking pretty normal or good in all types of hats?

stealthn 09-01-2025 08:07 PM

How wide does the brim have to be?

I wear one that operators wear in the desert countries, but the brim isn’t very wide and I like it.
