got about 35-40 minutes in and bailed - didn't hold my interest and Sean Penn's acting was painful

I thought it was brilliant. A dark comedy send up of the radical left and right, timely on the right side. It reminded me of the People's Liberation Army on the left side and ICE and extremists on the right. All this with a heavy dose of craziness mixed in, and some top notch action and suspense. Sean Penn's over the top characterization of Lockjaw was what I liked best about it. I can't even process it all- need to watch it again right away. It streams on HBO Max for free.

Lots of layers to this movie.
The up & down chase scene in the Anza Borrego Desert where the daughter has her life path realization is like a Alfred Hitchcock scene. The way the underground folks are embedded in their government administration roles and their constant secretive help they give Leo and his daughter is good stuff that catches you off guard every time. The use of older technology is a lesson in urban warfare, duly noted. Commander Lockjaw is my next Halloween costume, his desire for a Christian nationalist secret society recognition and the reason for his demise is sinister stuff just dripping with irony.

This is excellent, but I'd watch the movie first.

I loved it but then I'm a bleeding heart liberal. My buddy Don Moffett, who's even more of a libsquirrel than me, plays one of the super fascists in the room at the end of the hallway and he's scary good in it!!
![]() ![]() He was also in Bosch, (playing the "car czar" running for mayor against Chief Irvin), and just about everything else on earth. Great guy.

It's....... good
Not a masterpiece as some have described it. Too long. Seemed like a 2 part movie. Too angry for me

Saw half of it then turned on to something else. Sean Penn is a great actor but he’s over the top in this one. Kind of ruined it for me.

Sean being over the top is a big part of what made the movie for me. He's a cartoon parody caricature of what a right wing extremist could be, just like Perfidia Beverly Hills and Junglepussy were to the leftist revolutionaries. The whole movie reminded me of the Coen brothers' creations.
If you only saw half, you missed some great stuff, including one of the best chase scenes ever, filmed in the "River of Hills" roads in southern CA. Don't watch this video if you plan on watching the movie!
