Do you ever describe yourself as “old”?

I always knew I was going to get old, just didn't think it was going to happen so fast.

Went to a memorial service yesterday for a dear friend of over 30 years who had been withered by a progressively degenerative lung disease the entire time I knew him. Losing him was tough. But he spent the entire last few years, when things were clearly in a terminal state, demonstrating how a real man deals with setbacks in a brave and dignified way. He was fully aware and able to give the command that keeping him alive by artificial means was no longer his wish. A man of true honor and integrity.

Yup, I'm old, but I've seen and felt some things.

Not letting the old man in is tough when a little 10 year old girl holds the door open for me because I have grey hair and a grey beard. Having just celebrated my 42nd anniversary of my 29th birthday yesterday, I feel luck to have no aching joints like so many of my contemporaries.

Here is another way I feel old. A recruiter reached out about a CFO job at a great non profit in town. I would have jumped at this 10 years, or even 5 years back. But, I have a part time gig that follows the school calendar job with full benefits. I make probably 1/3 of what they will pay and am bored more often than not. But, the schedule is amazing and the flexibility isn't something I can give up. I'll work for roughly 4 more years. Part of me would love a more exciting work challenge, but the old guy in me values time more than money or challenge these days.
