A long road trip with the travel trailer I try to limit to a 6 hour day. I could do more going east with no mountain driving to consider.

When I was a bit younger, 12 hour days or more to get me where I was going for work or travel wasn't a big deal.

I did Calgary to Barstow in about 30 hours with a couple of little sleeps along the way.
Someone thought it would be fun to take the little camper down to Cabo in a truck that didn't have air conditioning.... Was a great solo trip.

With the number of idiots on the road today about 15 minutes is all I can take before I'm ready to call it a day.

once per year I make the August scorching hot trip from the Phoenix metro to Carmel for car week. Leave early, drive fast. I can typically make it to say Bakersfield before I have to throw in the towel, so to speak, on the heat. Next day though is sublime, CA 58 from McKitrick to Atascadero. Through the south of the Paso wine country. And if PCH is open onto Cambria for the early morning foggy run to breakfast tin Big Sur

I’ve done dozens of ~12-hour (nominal time) drives. Anything more than that in a day feels long. Longest day I’ve done is 16 hours - that was rough. Longest overall trip I’ve done is probably a tie between Vancouver-Olympic Peninsula-Portland-Moab-Denver-Chicago and Berkeley-Bellingham-Glacier-Black Hills-Chicago. Both fantastic trips.

We drive to Florida every year from Ontario. My limit is 10 hours but if I’m close to home I’ll drive the extra couple of hours. I do stop a few times a day. I avoid driving at dusk/night. I don’t need to hunt a deer using my grille
We also drove to Scottsdale Arizona a couple of years ago, that was an easy drive. No traffic, set the cruise to 85 mph.

I’m driving 210 every day to work and back. Plus driving in the neighborhood into lumberyards to get stuff. That’s about 6 hours every day, so I’m not inclined to go on any more long trips.

Can’t wait to start working at home again.

Flying is a lot faster for long distances but there is something about having your car when you get there and being able to bring whatever you want with no TSA/airport/getting to the airport hassle.

I'm planning a 4000 mile trip this spring, hoping to do it in 16 days with no more than 5 or 6 hours of driving any day.

Oh, and as far as driving without stopping, the wife has to stop every 2 - 3 hours, negating any range advantage of the vehicle.
Dec 1 - the wife had to have her vacation request for 2026 submitted today. She wanted to take 3 weeks, the most they will let her take is 2 weeks. Actually we have 17 days. I mapped out our trip for 14 days, so I may do some modifications. Day 1 is 9+ hours from La Crosse to Rapid City SD. I know we won't get a an early start, and it takes a good hour to drop the dogs off. I would like to be off the road by 5:00pm to 6:00 pm each night, so I may have to change things up. Day 2 was supposed to be Mount Rushmore and then drive to Denver. Maybe we'll stop short of Rapid City, then on day 2 stop in Fort Collins or Cheyenne.

Just looked, there's not a lot an hour or two east of Rapid City.

I've got one other 9+ hour day in the plan. We want to visit the Grand Canyon, but on the eastern end. I'll start a thread when it gets closer to the date.

I can sleep standing up if I'm tired enough and I can sleep like a baby in the right car. It's motels and Holiday Inns that I hate to check in and out of when I'm driving over the road. Some are better than others but I can't stand hotels in general. I have a cousin who feels the same way and he used to tow his Porsche race car all over the country with a Ford Excursion and sleep in the back. And he is as rich as they come...it's not about saving $$, it's about sleeping well with a pistol at your side in a sleeping bag knowing that no one is stealing that ****ing trailer.

I have an RV which is of course the ultimate bed on wheels but my old Mercedes with the seat reclined all the way back is like business class on British Airways. It goes almost completely flat and with a pillow and a blanket, sleepy time.

Travel has become less appealing with the increasing risk of getting exposed to bedbugs. Lots of places that I might have stayed in the past are now not on my list of possibles.

With the number of movies I go to each week, I'm glad Boston theaters are bedbug free.

I haven't been to a movie theater in probably 15 years, at least.

One of my best friends is in pest control and does a ton of bed bug eradication in the mountain resort towns in Colorado.

Ski at your own peril. Bedbugs await you in the condo you've booked.

I suspect DDT will kill anything, including us.

Not what they use though; bedbug eradication is tedious and expensive.
