What’s a long road trip for you?
I’m curious, what’s a long day behind the wheel for you?
I’ve had some long days behind the wheel recently including a marathon 17 hour drive home from Moab 2 weeks ago and today’s 10.5 hour drive to The Pas, Manitoba enroute to Churchill, Mb. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1764554130.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1764554153.jpg Today, I had good winter driving conditions most of the way. That gravel highway through the bush at dark was interesting… one whitetail nearly ruined my week but decided to turn just before she hopped in front of me. |
What's the heck is up in Churchill or Northern Mb? It must be for work?
I use to do 10-12 hour days straight up to Oregon from LA in the winter. It was exciting getting through the pass in knee deep snow through hwy 5. |
I could do 10-12 hour drives, but nowadays, a long drive is 5-6 for me. I just haven’t needed to go anywhere long distance.
|
In my 911, I have done several dozen 12 hour days. My wife has ridden with me on many, and we have done 5,000 mile two week trips.
I know if I head west on I-40 from my house it is 911 miles to the hotel I like in Flagstaff, AZ. If I head east on I-40 to Marysville, TN it is 914 miles to the hotel I like, just outside the Tail of the dragon. After 41 states, Canada and California 4 different times, road trips are easy. I usually shut it down after 12 hours or so. |
Anytime it takes over a tankful of gas.
I can go 400 miles on one tank. |

More than 12 hours.

I would agree that 10-12 hours would be a long drive for me too. In my youth, I did several 24 hour slogs- not the smartest thing anymore.
Even if I haven’t been driving for 24 hours, any all night drive after being awake all day is too much; the wildlife crossing the roads, the oncoming headlights in your eyes, just makes for a sketchy drive. |
Now days, 8-10 hours and I like to stop and enjoy a warm meal. Fast food and a cup of coffee while driving just aint cuttin it no mo
|
I once landed in Richmond at 9pm, decided to rent a car and drive to Niagara Falls through Philly (thinking breakfast there). It poured all night. Got to Philly, had breakfast, rested for a couple hours and decided to press on to save money on hotel. I had to pull over to get some shut eye around 11am upon a rest area only to wake up in the dark. I was beat. Never again.
The one thing I must say, the rest areas are so much nicer then we have here in the west coast especially in CA. |

We once drove home from Emporia KS to SW WI on a tank. Stopped in Newton for Supper. For us a long road trip is at least two days. |
Drove from Texas to California in a U haul truck.
Due to some sort of rift in space/time,it took almost 4 days and somehow appeared to cover eleventy billion miles Seriously though, U haul is not good |
Well, I drive vehicles on a test track for 8 hours a day so...lol.

A guy I used to work with drove a Pacifica....they are nice rides. My Honda has a 10 gal tank...40 mpg. But it is only comfortable for 2 or 3 persons.:) |
I can do one long day - 9 - 12 hours, but then I need a day or two to recover. I made the drive from La Crosse to Mid Ohio a couple of times, that's about 9 1/2 hours depending on Chicago traffic.
I'm planning a 4000 mile trip this spring, hoping to do it in 16 days with no more than 5 or 6 hours of driving any day. We did a honeymoon trip to Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. I cut a day our of stay in Boston to add an extra day to driving back. Oh, and as far as driving without stopping, the wife has to stop every 2 - 3 hours, negating any range advantage of the vehicle. |

We only made it up to Frelighsburg to the Apple Cider Wine place, Pinnacle I think. 1,650 miles or so from home. We spent a week getting there and hit all of the New England states, even into northern Maine, and Acadia national Park. We toured the facility, bought some Apple Cider wine, and then went to a local French restaurant the winery recommended. My "rule" to say I have visited a state (or Canada) is that I have to be there long enough to see some site, and eat at a restaurant, and use the restroom. Like getting into the UP of Michigan, we drove across the bridge, and along the interstate for 20 miles, and then headed back south to our hotel in Traverse, MI. Not a real visit as we did not see anything but lots of trees, and no restroom stop, but we spent a week in Michigan. Mackinac Island is really cool, and the buffet at the Grand Hotel is something to behold. Just astonishing. |
I haven't had a road trip in a while. In March, I drove to Dallas. It was ~275 miles and 4 hours. It wasn't a long drive. It's probably been ~15 years since I made a long drive, 550 miles in about 8.5-9 hours because of the wife and dog along for the ride. I'd previously made the same drive by myself in the 911 in closer to 7 hours. The longest drive that I ever made was 1000 miles and took about 17 hours because I stopped and took a 3 hour nap in the middle of the drive.
I am generally more concerned with getting to my destination and minimizing travel time. I suppose if I were to plan a road trip, where the trip was the destination and I took interesting routes, that would be different, but I've never done that. |
Today? Maybe 25 miles.
|
I can do 300 miles, take an hour bteak and do another 300 miles. That is my limit for one day.
|
Depends on what I am driving, weather conditions, and where I am driving.
Towing or in an RV with significant crosswinds- 6 hrs Joyride in the Macan through scenic roads- Typically no more than 8 hrs. Need to get somewhere in a hurry on the open highway. Macan, Chevy PU, Cayman, -12 hrs |
I still rip across this country, same as it ever was.

A long trip for me is Adelaide to Perth - 2,695 km (1,674.595 miles).
- 29 hours on the road or 3 days with overnight breaks. Adelaide to Sydney is 1,374 km (853.764 miles) - 14 hours on the road and I used to do it in one session in my 20s. Now I'd take an overnight break at the half way point. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1764581419.jpg |
Spring Breaks in Ft. Lauderdale were 17 hr roadtrips ... only stopping to take care of leaks.
Now .... 17 minutes :D |
Traveling with my wife, we stop about every 1.5 hours with a total travel time of eight to ten hours , so about 5 hours with the wheels turning.
Traveling solo, I tend to do double the distance in the same period of time. Last June, I drove 3.5 hours to visit a sister in hospital, had lunch with another sister who reported a brother was not doing well, drove a further 1.5 hours to check on him then did the 5 hour drive back home. I do not drink coffee when I'm trying to do distance. That allows my old bladder to do 2.5 hours. The "old man's car " will go 800km (500 m) on a tank. We both have our limits. |

San Francisco to Boston in 54 hours in a 69E https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/116053-54-hours-69-e.html 2023 Portland, OR to Boston on a 1993 Ducati 900 SS/SP in 7 days, many thanks again to Jeff Higgins, John and Mike https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1135148-new-me-ducati-900-ss-sp-12.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1688919101.jpg Have also done 3 other x-country trips in a matter of days, Amelia Island in 1 day. Chicago in 14 hours... I like driving. Starting from Atlanta to San Francisco on September 12 was a crazy weird trip. Eerie. Like in a movie. |
I don’t care about distance, but prefer to keep it around 10 hours per day. I don’t care how comfy the seats are, eventually my ass starts to hurt! My wife and I have the goal of doing some fun car cross country road trips once my youngest is done with high school. 3.5 more years! At that point the focus will change from “getting there” to enjoying the trip, which will probably come with more detours and stops.

Driving distance depends if I am in a sports car or truck and trailer stuck in the right 2 lanes (most of the time)..
San Diego to Laguna Seca 7 or 8 hours about my limit. Leave at 3 am, drive through Los Angles at 5am, arrive at the track at 11am. Spend the afternoon unloading the race car, getting it teched and setting up the pit. Return trip after racing all day Sunday eve depart Laguna Seca go through Los Angles at midnight just to get a 2 hour delay because a car carrier of Teslas are on fire on the freeway and the smoke is too toxic so the 5 freeway is closed both directions for an hour or so... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1764595628.jpg |
Jersey to Indianapolis...in one shot...on my R1100S.
Then there was the time I drove from Arkansas to jersey in one shot....and went to work after three hours sleep. |
The longest in terms of continuous time behind the wheel was 23 or so hours, Colorado Springs, Colorado to Columbus, Ohio in my 1956 356. Longest in terms of distance was Yellow Springs, Ohio to Colorado Springs, Colorado via Jasper, Alberta, Canada in the same car. The trip that felt the longest was 500 miles from Hickory, NC to Eaton, OH in a snow&ice storm in a U-Haul truck. It took about 18 hours. Fastest road trip was Sterling, Colorado to Lincoln, Nebraska in under 4 hours. Mercedes C 320.
Now, 8 hours dragging a trailer was my latest test, and I think that’s about my limit. |
10-12 hrs max for me in a day these days….preferably shorter than that.
|
I love the way you enjoy your car, Glen. I was like that in my 356s a couple of decades ago.
|
When I was younger almost unlimited it just depended on the motivation . Now ? About 5-6 hours and I am uncomfortable and want to get out . Part of that is being retired , my mind says what's the rush :D
|
1000 miles is the furthest I've gone in a day. Probably 16 hours because of a massive headwind (50mph, at times) in a 3/4 ton SD Ford. Never again.
Longest trip was around 2,200 miles, AND BACK, to Nova Scotia to buy a motorcycle. 5 days of suck. On a motorcycle, ANY MOTORCYCLE, 200 miles and my butt is done for the day. |
Back in the early 2000s we had a 1998 4x4 Eddie Bauer Expedition. It was fully loaded and had a 30 gallon fuel tank. It was very comfy on the highway with plenty of room for the family as it had a 3rd row. When we lived in Talladega, we could fill up the tank and head to Gulf Shores which was about 4 hours away and still have about 1/4 of a tank left. My wife still longs for her truck!!! We have a 2006 Nissan Quest van and it is pretty comfy on the highway also, easy to get in and out of, and it can pull the Hobiecat.

My longest recent single drive was a few years back. I drove this combo home to Spokane WA from Menlo Park CA. Roughly 925 miles. I didn't really intend to do it all in one day, but once I passed Bend where I had planned to spend the night, I was committed. I just wasn't that tired, and I was also a bit leery of having this 914 on an open trailer in a crap hotel parking lot. I don't think I'd do that again.

On the trip I posted photos above from, I drove my Mini to Minneapolis, (had a nice ring to it), spur of the moment back in September. On the way back, I made it in 2 days of driving but had to pull over past Vegas for a nap on the side of the road. I was pretty knackered when I got home to L.A. I just wanted to get home.
That's almost exactly 2000 miles in 2 days. A lot of it was at over 100mph, through Nebraska and eastern CO. there is next to zero speed enforcement on the interstate and through Utah on the 70, you can go as fast as you want. Traffic is moving at 80+ so just use lane discipline and courtesy, I slow down to pass people and then back on the gas. On the 15 between Utah and Vegas, the speed limit is 80. Limit drops to 70 in CA but traffic is going 80. I've never been pulled over and done this drive more times than I can count. Use common sense and be safe, it depends on traffic density and what I'm driving, of course. I recently drove my truck and trailer to Sacramento and back in one day with MMarsh to pick up a car, that was about 12 hours of driving and I was seeing monkeys sitting on the hood by the time we got back to his place. A little scary. |
Lately, just about as far as it takes to get the engine to operating temperature.
