Fascinating time suck! Caution

This is just fascinating to me. Very cool clear explanation of what he is doing. If you ever wondered what are the jewels mentioned in old mechanical watches, he shows that.

I know for sure, I will never take up this hobby, but watching him, and listening to him talk about the parts and procedures is cool.

And as my tittle says, this and his other videos are total time suck, but you will learn something.

Hell yeah! Mechanical watches, pocket, wrist, or otherwise are amazing. And that they are/can be hand made and "tuned" is equally amazing.

The same reason that I love mechanical watches (well one of the reasons) is why I also love pretty much anything made by craftsman, like air cooled Porsches, McLaren F1s, pre-war cars, hand made furniture and fine trim work, etc...

I started "making" watches, really just assembling cases, dials and movements. But...you get sucked in. I have now dug into movements. I have done some repairs: reversing wheels and keyless works. I've changed some keyless works to eliminate the date function on dateless dials.

I ended up at an IWC course where we took apart a practice movement and put it back together, under direction. That was pretty amazing. It is a bigger movement, more like an old pocket watch movement. But it is cool to have it work after reassembly!

In the new year, I'm going to fully service (disassemble, clean, oil and reassemble) an ETA 2824-2 movement.

This one is cool as well. Super complex Carrera chronograph. First to think someone designed and built it, and then to see the inner working of a very complex watch is interesting.

My dad's training in Germany was to become a watch maker . Back then a watch maker made everything except the lense . He learned quickly and became certified . Purchased his own watch makers lathe and went to work . After the war my mom/dad/brother came to the US and my dad became a tool and die machinist . Sadly all his watch makers tools were stolen
