dang. been a bit Sharky out there.

me and a few are headed out Monday for some last of the year rock fish. season closes out 2025 on Dec 31.

I delivered all my frozen fish to Texas and I need a few in the deep freeze to ride out spring. April 1 is the rock fish opener.

I swear, I get bumped by Mr. White and I am going boat shopping. hahah.. there has been a huge uptick in sightings and encounters. I think a woman got ate! suspected..missing lady last I heard.

on the bright side. weather reports says Monday will be downright glassy out there. no winds and two foot swells.

I wish I was best friends with a pod of orcas. haha.. my wife thinks I should tape my kayak up so it looks like a killer whale....so funny, that woman.

Is that the story where the swim club lady went missing and a couple folks said they saw a great white with a body in its mouth?

You guys are crazy taking kayaks and such out with those things.

Our Puget Sound is the home of several pods of Orcas, aka Killer Whales. They do a fine job of keeping that kind of riff raff out. Even an unusually large Great White, say 2,000 - 2,500 pounds, is no match for a 12,000 pound bull.

Interestingly, reports are coming in from the Mediterranean and North Seas of Orcas attacking both pleasure and commercial vessels. Seems rather contrived and sensationalized to me. Ours have been perfectly safe to intermingle with, even in sea kayaks with, as far as I can remember, no real problems ever reported. I dunno, maybe I missed it. I do know that I would rather have them around than Great Whites. They are intelligent and curious animals. Great Whites strike me as no more than unintelligent instinctive killing machines.

Dude you are nucking futs. That’s a hard no for me. The ocean is scary enough, I’d definitely be fishing from the dock if there were sharks in the forecast.

The struggling fish on the line -vibration and blood- draws the sharks right to you. Seen enough videos to know I would never do this. Best of luck.

Having lived in SoCal my adult life I have had 1 or 2 incidents, no bites, but a heavy push that directed me to the beach pronto. Likely seals or similar. The last 15 years scuba diving made more fear go away and now after a dive we surface bummed out if no sharks were encountered. We are not a menu item for that species except for that rare occasion.

Nope.... sharks don't need 11 herbs and spices for kayaks to taste just like chicken!

From Jaws the movie:
Quint: "Sometimes that shark, he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya. And those black eyes roll over white, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin', the ocean turns red, and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces." Hooper: " Mr. Vaughn, what we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks, and that's all."

Where you fishin' Vash? If in the bay area kelp it is always sharky out there. They don't think we taste good so they would only eat you by accident or if they were really desperate.

I like diving with them because I can observe their movements and spot the aggressive ones or the overly curious. On the surface in a kayak, they are sneaky stealth. I have had a couple of bluff charges by Pacific Greys who didn't like me blowing bubbles in their hunting territory but no contact.

Sonoma Coast Monday. a buddy got bumped two weeks ago.

I would crap myself. everyone tells me it is curiosity and missed identification..they have NEVER circled back around to finish the meal EVER.

I worked out the scenario. poop myself. flip my kayak right side up, and scramble back on board and sit in the warm pile in my shorts. I've practiced the moves, and I think a shark would put it into fast-mode.

and they call yellow kayaks YUM YUM yellow. they are the kayak punted mostly. my suit is unfortunately yellow. hahahha..

according to Facebook and the Instagram..it will be a town meeting out there.

end of season, glassy conditions, and EVERYONE called in sick. I won't be alone at all. I'll stay near the yellow kayaks, like a gazelle. safety in numbers.

I have a new fishing rod and reel to get slimy!!
