Rolling gate Latch with lockable feature on both sides
A rolling solid gate I have needs to be opened from either side with a key to prevent someone from jumping the fence and unlatching a typical latch. At present I have a flat steel bar inserted through the side of the gate frame and on through the fixed post that the gate closes to. There is a padlock on each side of the post/frame on the bar and I can use one from the alley and the other from inside the gate. It closes up to a wall so I can't go around. It's one or the other.
I installed hundreds of sliding patio doors, some with an outside keyed entry. None of them had an inside keyed lock unless I added one at the top or bottom. I've never seen a double keyed lock for a sliding door or gate all-in-one. And I can't find one. The Pelican brain trust is tasked with finding a solution that would be outside or barn door friendly, better than a wrapped chain and in no way decorative. This needs to be a 3 feet or so, not at the bottom and there is no head jamb to vertically latch to. So that rules out Euro multi point latching mechanisms aside from the fact that they are very expensive. ![]() I've replaced these before at $300+ea. plus tax and shipping. Call it $400 all in. Not gonna happen on an alley gate. I can't use a mortise lock anyway, it has to be surface mount on the inside with a lockable function from the solid blank outside. |

What is the gate made of? At several pools I built, we had a steel gate that we welded a box on. The box was drilled so that an entrance lock could be utilized.
If your gate is steel or aluminum, can you add the box and use something like in the pictures below? Or maybe a mag lock? The website I got the pictures from is in the UK, but they have to have them here. https://www.dciron.co.uk/collections/locks ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Pics one 1 and 2 would work since the steel frame is 2 x 2 square tubing. 3 and 4 are mortise and I can't use a mortise lock. The skin is T&G redwood on the outside face. I bolted nailers around the inner perimeter to nail the RDW to.
By the looks of No. 1 and 2 that might be more than I want to spend. But yes, I can weld on a prefab box. Seen a ton of them for swinging gates and they use a 20 buck double dead bolt. I have that on the other driveway gate that swings. Ah, I see #2 is for a swing door. |

Picture one is for a rolling gate and picture two is the receiving part. I take it that when the gate rolls closed, you swing the lever and it twists the lock in and out of the receiving part.
![]() ![]() With these two, you could weld up a box to mount the locks. Then fabricate your fixed post to accept the locks ![]()

The first lock is about $100 USD. The second lock was about $25 USD.

This one is about $40 on Amazon. You could weld up a stronger box to hold the guts. I like this one, because it doesn’t have a lever or knob to strong arm open the gate.

OK, I see that 1 and 2 are the set and I meant 3 when I said 2. I can, but I'd rather not make the necessary mods to the gate frame to let in a lock case mech. I'd have to weld in tabs for the mounting screws as well. I'd much prefer just doing the bore for no. 1 with the no. 2 strike.
I looked at the UK source and FOA I didn't see anything near $25 US and with shipping and tariff added, I see a min of $100. It not that important to me to change this over. I guess I can search for the specs on installation. I was hoping for a more barn like industrial solution as might be found on a commercial rolling door. I have looked on and off for years. Google has been no help. One sided affairs are available. There is one other problem and I should have shown a pic. The redwood fencing is on the outside of the frame making the condition 2 3/4" with the steel frame off center. I'm not sure I could extend the exterior cylinder out 3/4". The point is I'd hate to get that shipped only to find I can't use it. |
