I have a space in my barn that's 24x42. Projector with a 16'x8' screen, 72" tv in the loft, sound system for both. Gonna work on a remodel over the winter. Moving the giant screen to another wall and relocating the projector. Moving exercise equipment and putting in a pool table. Considering putting in laminate flooring in the entire room. Got some work to do.

I have not read all this, and maybe it has been said-
I don't understand the "mancave "thing at all. For sure I hang out in the shop . I dont want a couch and bar there. That's for the comforts of my home. SO,-to be rude or to the point, is a mancave for men that are not allowed to do as they like in their own home>? They have high-maintenance wives? Just curious. Or, perhaps I am just a lot different as per usual.

Afterburn-
“I have not read all this, and maybe it has been said- I don't understand the "mancave "thing at all.” My shop area has evolved overtime, Started as a good spot for storage. I use my garage to house cars and mechanics tools so there isn’t much room for woodworking but plenty in the down below. My son and I do quite a bit of woodworking, he’s built several chairs and tables to give to friends and having a completely different enclosed area to make sawdust, noise, stain and finish projects is great! I don’t have any couches or a bar there but there is a small fridge to keep water and beer cold. I refer to it as my mancaveshop but it’s more shop and storage than anything else. I’m always “allowed” anywhere in the house at anytime 😄 Being retired for the last decade I do admit it’s a good getaway spot,my weights and workout bench are down there too so I can grunt and grown to my hearts content while listening to music I like, my wife and i have different tastes. I don’t know if that helps to explain it, it’s great use of an otherwise huge and empty space |

Why is it called a man cave?
The concept of a "man cave" can be traced back to ancient times when men would gather in caves to escape the elements and socialize with each other. However, in modern times, the term "man cave" refers to a specific space within a home or building that is designated for a man's personal use and enjoyment. For a car guy it is your shop. A guest entering my garage said "Oh a Man Cave". Girls can have a she-shed.

We have one room that is the entertainment room with all the computers, projector, surround sound, guitars, drums and table for working on models and RC cars. We have another room for the 3D printers, the HO train, exercise equipment, spare computers and shelves for the RC cars and airbrush spray booth. The planes hang in the entertainment room as decoration when not flying them
We have no TV in the living room, just a piano and bookshelves with the normal seating options.

What is a man cave? I see workshops here and separate rooms, plus just an area off to the side. What is the criteria? Do you have to have a TV and/or stereo and a couch? Maybe a bar?
I've been through a dozen iterations. I have one outbuilding attached to the garage that was a real man cave for the first owner of the house, 1940 thru 1960's. No cigar smoking in the house so he retreated to the paneled and otherwise finished out original one car garage. He had an old radio out there as well. The big door is now French doors and there is a 3/4 bath in the laundry right next to it. I have stayed in the room for up to a week when there were family members staying with us. It's almost an ADU but no kitchen. My wife has more or less conceded the space although she has a doll collection out here (yes, my main desktop is here) and her mom's old spinet piano. There is a sound system, actually two. One stereo for music and one simple sound system for the TV. Lots of comfortable furniture and a juke box. There are shelves and a bookcase and there are mementos galore, the kind that don't fit so well in the house. Same goes for posters that don't seem conducive to the house decor. Think of your teenage bedroom. That has to be a man cave and no work is done there. That is the difference here between the workshop/garage complete with sounds, posters and collectable antique tools, but where work is done. That's where the working tools and machines are. So what is a man cave? You work there or not? If it's a corner of a large shop, I assume you don't work there, just relax. Or is it a garage void of any visible means of tools and supplies all sanitized with a wall of cabinets and a shiny floor? Maybe some vanity signage. If you want to get right down to it, my bedroom is as much of a man cave as anything you've seen. There is not one shared or feminine thing in there. I have my dad's old walnut dresser and secretary where he did his homework. It's all Pendleton wool blankets and western theme landscape framed art. Pseudo Ralph Lauren: Leather, wood and wool done very retro. Old 1930 to WWII radios but no TV. |

Maybe I have a man work cave
. To be clear there is no furniture in mine other than one old bar stool that I take a break on . A small flat screen TV and heat/air . While it is decorated nicely I perform all auto work in there . I really don't care what it's called , I enjoy spending time there . I currently have a steel flatbed for my dually on the lift that I am cleaning up before installing .

I don't care what it's called either. I had my room way before there was a man cave and she shed. The latter sounds silly like it was made up just to put some wimin on equal ground.
And before that it was just the garage or barn, no matter who hung out. Incidentally, where I grew up in the city tracts we had a 2-car garage with 2 cars in it. There was no workbench that I remember and no place to work on bicycles and go karts. So there was the driveway. That was my shop. Neither of my parents had any tools beyond the most fundamental screw driver, hammer and golf clubs. I had more tools than my dad by the time I was 10. But he had a full bar setup in the house. |
