The original transmission had severe main bearing wear and upon decel it made a huge "womp womp womp" sound. Instead of repairing/rebuilding that trans, I sourced a very good 1998 parts car with 125,000 miles. I transferred the trans/rear diff about 30,000 miles ago. The axles have roll pins through the splines. I'll jack it up and do what 908/930 recommends.

I do not think it is the transfer case clutch, pretty sure that is only attached to the front drive on that car with the drive to the rear wheels being straight through. I'm still thinking rear half shaft, or somebody tried to steal the catalytic converter and attached the rope to the driveshaft by mistake and it is gone.

Driveshaft and the rear axles are still there.

Here's what mine looks like. That's where the front axles get pinned in.

Can anything in there fail causing the slipping? I've driven the car like it is for at least 50 miles, 30 of that was on the freeway at 65mph with no odd sounds or vibrations.

Strangest symptom is the MPH following the RPM when slipping with no change in actual speed.

From what I looked at, the speed sensor is located near the rear of the transmission, so likely spinning correctly there. The output flange is likely attached by a spline, usually very strong and more likely to break the shaft. Trying to turn each rear wheel while transmission in 1st should point to the problem.

Still sounds off to me, it should be much worse in higher gears. Can you leave it in 1st gear and lift the rear one side at a time and try to spin each tire, just checking that your axle splines are still attached properly to your diff.

Nailed it out of the gate. Right rear cv connection failed. The axle was pulled out of the differential about an inch or 25mm. The mount prevents the axle form completely separating and flopping about. I drove it this way for over 50 miles and no odd sounds whatsoever.

I never disconnected any axles.

The car did it for me. :)

And admittedly, I didn't check the rear closely enough. I just looked while under the middle of the car to see they were there. After all, I never touched that. How could that be the problem?

Raised only the corner being tested. Each rear wheel would turn easily. Each front wheel resisted accordingly.

Ordering axles tonight.

Ya'll rock!

But I owe 908/930 a coupla beers. He told me three times.;)

Good to hear you found the problem, and easier fix then clutch. Not sure if you need new half shafts do the joints feel ok? It is strange that they are able to pop out.

They are original and have 335,000 miles.
They’ve certainly earned a retirement.

Going back to post #1 it seems Subiworx missed it too.

I only had them install the cable. I didn’t ask them to fix it if it wasn’t the cable.

They didn’t do anything wrong.

I should’ve made that clear. :p

Glad you got it fixed.
The weirdest clutch problem I ever encountered also turned out not to be a clutch problem. Triumph Spitfire clutch would not disengage. Long story short, the crankshaft thrust bearing was gone. Gone as in not there anymore. Probably in many past oil filters.
