JLP Racing did make it to PIR back in the day...I heard the mary jane smuggling rumors.
Never did hear the complete story...so, I'd guess this is "mostly true"?

I'm pretty sure that between Lanier, the Whittingtons and John Paul Sr, that JPSr was by far the most ruthless of the drug smugglers who went big-time racing. He tried to kill a witness for his drug trial.
John Paul Jr.had a career because of the smuggling; he was a really good driver, made it to Indycars but his jail time cut his career short. If he'd had the chances to drive without the smuggling he probably would have been considered one of the greats, but he might not have had the drives without the drug money.
