World Paper Currency Collection
I've had my currency collection for over 30 years and it sat untouched for the last 10 of those.
It consisted of about 150 paper bills....approx 50/50 US and other countries. The US bills were mostly silver certificates and early two dollar bills. A coin and currency shop opened near me last summer and today I decided to bring it in and find out if it was worth selling. I dropped it off for the guy to appraise and came back an hour later. I had my mind set at not taking any less than $200. He offered $347....I took it. I can find a use for that money now.....if I left it on the shelf, it would be of no use to me.

Good on you. I have collections I have no use for, but I doubt any of them worth much...maybe not worth the hassle to sell. More pocket knives and hunting knives than I should have bought comes to mind..
Paper money...lol! Reminded me of one..for a gag birthday gift to pen pal Howard Shoemaker, I asked Evren to send a million Turkish Lira note. At the exchange rate of the time, almost $20. So, Shoe died a millionaire...

Did you research the early 2 dollar bills? Some can be quite valuable. BTW, the silver certificates are real money. Taken to a bank they must give you the equivalent in silver metal but since the USD is not based on gold and silver anymore they might just renege on that though

I didn't take it, but he had hand written the value of each...then deducted his percentage. The world bills, he said, are basically worthless. They are all out of circulation value. (I figured that) I knew it but he pointed that out about a couple of the $2's....but I think he said they were worth about $20 each. The SC's were all ones and fives along with one ten.

I have a $20 US bill stamped with HAWAII on the front and back. They were issued during WW2 and used only in Hawaii and if the Japanese invaded the island, and broke into the banks and stole the currency, the Fed could de-certify all of the cash.

I've never seen that one....why was that one printed?
I'm sure it's not legal tender.

I have thought $2 bills were stupid. They should have made the $2.50 instead. Much like a quarter is handy as change, a $2.50 bill would be perfect instead of one $5.
As change goes away, maybe a $2.50 and a $25.00 will be issued. Yea right, too logical.

On the appraising list, I noticed one at $40 for the value. I asked, and he said it was the Silver Certificate Horse Blanket ten dollar bill.
That one was in rough shape...if it had been better, it very well might have been worth double.

He also said that if trying to use the older world currency for face value....none of it would be accepted in the country of issue.

Good thinking! I've always thought of $5 notes as being stripper money. But a $2.50 note would be even better for the ugly ones.

^^^ Times have changed....we always used $1 bills for the good ones and nothing for the bad ones.

I have a bunch of worthless paper....unless anyone is interested in the WWII paper money my Dad brought back from occupied Japanese territory.

He fought in the Battle of the Bulge....and would never talk about it. .

You wanna hear a story to cry over, my mom gave me a 20 dollar gold piece. Seems the folks of the era liked to call them pieces. I have a few coins from when the Queen Mary went 'round the horn for the only time ever and stopped at ports of call in S. America. My grandparents took that cruise.
What does this have to do with the gold coin? Well it's pretty small and I cannot find it even amongst the others which tend to be large. The things are selling over 3K now. That's a lot to be lost in the house somewhere. |

I haven't kept up, obviously. Seems that value places a premium over the gold content. I can say that if it was graded it would certainly be "circulated" somewhere around 8-12. And since I don't have it in hand I have no date, no mint.
I'm not seeing 5K but I'm in no position to doubt you. |
