the point of my post was to suggest using your child's interest in body mod to learn more about them and *god forbid* have a reasonable dialog with them rather than just "putting [your] foot down." you put your foot down hard enough, and you'll crush her underneath it.

having said that, i do think you pursued the right track with your daughter...show her the options, the side effects, question her reasoning.

don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to criticize anyone's parenting. they're your kids, do what you will with them. i just hate to see kids become alienated from their parents...i didn't talk to my parents for years b/c of how they "put their feet down" with me.

there are a lot of kids i see at shows and things who have no feedback from their parents at all -- positive or negative. kids like that, with completely uninvolved parents, end up wandering around until they glom onto something. unfortunately, it's usually something far more dreadful than a tongue piercing.

anyway...this thread is about stupid tattoos, not parenting, right? sooooo i will step down off my little flaming liberal soap box and shut up.

cheers!
Hope you're having fun back there in Virginia Beach...My "kid" is now 33, an RN working on her 2nd hubby, living in mid USA. She and I don't get along. BUT..she can make a living, without relying on Govt. or charitable help. Yep, I must have been a failure as a parent. But you know? I think I DID do my job. She is now an adult, can make a living, and doesn't have to worship any ideology in order to do so. So? She & I don't get along? Bothers me not. "I did my job".

I'm not quite clear on whether you're actually trying to make a point, or if your post is just a fuzzy attempt at sarcasm. Like I said before, I wasn't trying to call anyone a bad parent. However, if the only goal of parenting is to raise children who can get a job, then I think somebody should send out a memo to all those parents who spend time and effort raising happy, emotionally stable people who can contribute more to society than an employable body. Let 'em know they've got it all wrong. Maybe Monster.com should start teaching parenting classes?

Oh and by the way, I also have a good job, and don't "worship any ideology in order to do so." Not sure what you were trying to imply there...just b/c I have tats, I'm mindless counter-culture zombie?

Sorry to hear that you and your daughter don't get along...Hope one or both of you wake up and smell the coffee someday, before it's too late. I had to lose my brother before I realized how valuable my family was. I don't always get along with my parents or my siblings, but there's nothing they could say or do that would make me lose any love for them. Every time I start to get upset over some minor annoyance, I say to myself, "Is this really worth it? If they die tomorrow, would I really want our last conversation to be about something so trivial?" That's not to say that I never disagree or argue with them -- I didn't like my sister's husband (now ex husband) and told her so. Told her ONCE, in a loving way, and then I left it alone. Not worth throwing away a whole relationship.

Please don't misread this as an ill-willed or argumentative post. Not trying to ruffle anybody's feathers. I just think this is an interesting discussion, and it's even more interesting to me that it stemmed from talk of tattooing!

I could have sworn this thread was about stupid tattoos...hmm. I knew a guy who had "1965" tattooed on the inside of his bottom lip b/c the number was part of the name of the band he was in. Needless to say, the band broke up...but the tat's still there. Another one comes to mind...my sister has the letter "D" on her shoulder. She originally had it done to represent the first letter of her husband's name. Now that they're no longer together, she tells people it stands for DIVORCED.
