The Wretched Start/Stop Button Is DEAD
Of note in recent news is the reversal of whatever regulations brought for the wretched Start/Stop button.
Originally, I was worried about the effect on our starters. Most recently, evidence has come out that the repeated fraction of a second during startups were causing excessive where on bearing surfaces due to lack of oil pressure. And consequently, since it’s been in place for quite some time, shops are beginning to see the ugly effects of that dubious requirement. One of the online (formerly print) motor magazines did a comparison on a track and the best they were able to find was a 3% improvement, but only for those limit they’re driving to around town/stopping and go driving. Later, I even heard that was optimistic. So here’s the question: anyone have any predictions on whether or not manufacturers and their dealers will provide a workaround for existing cars? Maybe a software update that lets you “set and forget”?

Some thoughts from the manufactures. In the end I doubt we’ll see any changes to existing cars. And given that cara are often developed for RoW standards and need to look years down the road, I’m not sure anyone will take a chance on eliminating the tech. |

My wife's 2017 Macan has a programmable key fob, and that was the first thing I changed, no more start stop. We do not drive in stop and go traffic on interstates like many large cities have for commuting. No commuting for either of us.
Most of my friends that have new cars have to poke the button on the console to turn that "feature" off for each trip. I have yet to hear anybody that likes the start stop function.

I've driven a couple/few vehicles with it. I'm not a fan myself, and have thought that it would increase wear.
At the same time, this is NOT about saving the driver of the vehicles money for gas. The amount of money that a single person will save is fairly inconsequential, but I do understand that if you multiply the reduction in fuel used by one car/driver over the course of a year, especially folks that have commutes in stop and go traffic, by the number of vehicles on the road, that it will eventually result in thousands, tens of thousands of gallons, or more of gas used over the course of a year. So while most of us don't like or want it, I don't know that it's necessarily a bad thing for the world.

Amazon has a plug in defeater for $13 (never have to push the button)
In the three years I've owned my Civic , I have only noticed it less than 5 times. It's so silent and smooth that it's virtually unnoticeable.

It was the most foolish idea to "save the planet" anyone ever heard of. This along with shutting down half the cylinders during highway driving certainly have negative effects on engine wear.

I bought a disabler that plugs into the obd port which allows it to remember the off setting so you wont have to turn it off every time. First thig I did when I bought my 2021 Wrangler.

My son's new Dodge Ram pickup has it. It's a huge generator looking thing that sits on top of the engine, I don't think they use the starter motor or if they even have one.

I shut it off in my wife’s cayenne and in every rental vehicle.
In my truck, I leave it on. It’s a hybrid and this is key to hybrid operation.

It’s yet another example of how manufacturers game the system and CAFE tests to meet MPG standards while also skirting gas guzzler taxes. I disable it in every car I own and drive, no way that can long term be good on starters or engines.

I love you man!!!!!!
![]() Now I need a seatbelt warning disabler, a "stay alert" disabler, a "lane departure" delete, keep your eyes on the road disabler, and a universal beep squalk delete. And an analog old school control panel with buttons and dials that fits over the touch screen crap. (oh my... $milllion dollar idea) I copyright it. Develop that and give me 40% Thanks, Ron Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 02-16-2026 at 04:42 PM.. |

I wonder if the hate for the auto start/stop is a generational thing? Probably all of us older folks have had many cars that we drove with at least the fingers on one hand crossed that it wouldn’t die on us and a car that shuts down makes our heart skip a beat whereas a younger person that has basically only lived during times of ultra reliable EFI computer controlled cars isn’t worried about a car not starting.

I had a rental truck recently, that had these stop start feature. I actually didn’t notice it at first, and then after driving in a while, I didn’t really bother me, like I thought it would.
That said, it can’t be good for the engine/starter, to start multiples of times more a day than normal. |

I've driven a few cars with start/stop over the years. I'm certainly not a fan.

^^^ That only disables it until the car is turned off.
Amazon has plug in defeaters that keep it off.

Same here. Most modern BMWs will deactivate stop/start automatically when driving in 'sport' mode.
