This is a good thread. I had to google it to see what my 2015 Lexus NX200t has and it has a 6 speed auto transmission. It felt like it had a CVT because it is so smooth. Well done Lexus for building a car with a smooth transmission. Obviously manual transmission are more engaging. But at this stage of life I am okay with anything that gets me to my destination.

At least, in my experience, it's just an automatic. The transmission in the wife's Outback seems like an ordinary automatic trans 98% of the time. The other 2% of the time, it'll pick an RPM and stay there without shifting until you reach the desired speed.

My preference for a transmission is a manual, but if I was buying something that was going to have an automatic of some sort (something not sporty), and I could specify a CVT that never tried to simulate the shift of an auto trans, that's what I'd go for.

I've driven econoboxes with automatic transmissions, and everyone that I've driven has sucked, I assume a corolla/tercel/econobox with a CVT would suck about the same as any other automatic unless it was just an especially bad CVT.

Early '90s. The Williams ctv was tested, but wasn't raced. Because the engine would always be in the Powerband, it should have been quicker, but may have led to greater engine stresses due to staying at high revs throughout the race.
