What makes this place great
The players of course but there are shining stars like herr_oberst who really make this place special. He was instrumental in helping with the purchase of my Ducati out in Portland and was a huge help the other day with an eBay purchase.
I'd been working on a customer BMW grille that turned out to be very rare. After cleaning up the customer attempt at restoration, I found one of the kidney grille ribs was ruined. I let him know and that I would find another for the rib. After a few days of searching, turns out the only grille I could find, at all, was the one below on eBay. The rib I needed was damaged but looked repairable. The fact that it was for sale points to the rarity. eBay seller, in Portland, was very nice but he couldn't overnight it. I asked Mr. Oberst if he would receive it (UPS/FedEx Ground is overnight) and put a new next day label on and get it off to me the day he got it. He waited around the whole day for it, got it, saw that it wasn't packaged very well, repacked it and then put my label on, went to UPS store and I was able to finish the grille. Thank you again Mike, you are a savior and part of what makes this place so great! ![]() ![]()

If I were in your shoes, I'd toss herr_oberst a fat gift certificate.

Shaun, I'm glad you were able to make it work. The new owner is going to love your effort and skill. And, Steve, I'm ok with Shaun just paying it forward. I'm happy to help out a Pelican when I can.

A few years ago Bill Auberlen's father posted here in the Parts section that he needed some early Turbo trim including the rockers to be taken to Vacaville yesterday. He had what seemed like a play pen posing as a speedometer shop in Manhattan Beach. The business is still there AFAIK, "Paul's Speedometer." — Gary Auberlen.
Anyway I've always had a PU so I contacted him, drove over and got the parts, brought them home and left at 0-dark thirty the next morning to deliver them at noon. Home that night. I did it for gas money just to take a road trip. The buyer was/is a member here but I forgot his name. I'll never forget his wife though. Can't say anymore as he might be reading. Let's just say attractive in a to-the-points way. Oh, and nice Turbo too.

Herr O has done lots of favors for me and is one of my fav. forum members.
Thanks for the thread, Shaun - the grille work is exemplary, as usual!

Paying it forward is my thing so no worries there. I wish I could start a new religion and preach the foundation of actively making the lives of people around you better. Friends, family, strangers all the same.

Back when we had the Christmas gift exchange, Shaun drew my name and really put a lot of effort into his gift to me. It was a couple custom made tee shirts with graphics of my Italian delivery '73 911T "Tangerine".
IIRC, he didn't know my shirt size so sent both an L and an XL. Things like that are more valuable than any monetary item. And how true fellowships are defined. I've never forgotten that act of kindness and generosity, Shaun.

It's the combination of everything here all at once that makes this place work so well Steve.

+1000. Sadly, it seems to be going away for me. Posting anything is a chore. I have to type it out in a word processor, copy to the pasteboard, log in, find the thread and copy my response to the board before I get booted off. I can only be logged in for about a minute. Posting pictures is hit-and-miss. I cannot use PPOT on my iPad at all.

Patrick, I'm having no troubles at the moment. Pelican has had more days with trouble than any forum I go to, but it still works most of the time. You need someone to walk you through some settings.
Yeah, posting live can be risky but I do it. I've lost dozens of lengthy posts but I figure that someone is telling me not to post. The funny thing is after a few minutes if really doesn't matter one iota.
