Metal gas can
I've been through a slew of the modern plastic gas cans. Because of the heat that we get here, the seam splits at the top of the handle, and when you try to pour, it's a horrible, stinking, dangerous mess. A couple of years ago, I bought a Justrite brand 5gal can. I read a bunch of reviews and the Justright seemed to be better than the Eagle brand which are almost the same.
I bought one of these as a test. At the time I think they were $65-70. They are a few dollars more now, but about the same. ![]() I wanted this version, but they became NLA ![]() My local hardware store has one of the versions like I bought on the shelf with a dent. I would have bought it to support the local store, but I'm not going to pay $70 for a dented gas can. It wouldn't change the functionality other than a slightly reduced (a few ounces?) capacity, but it's the principle of paying a lot for a damaged gas can. It was still sitting on the shelf, and I like the can, so today I took it to the register and asked if they could do anything about the price because of the dent. When the girl came back from the mgrs office, she said "is $15 ok". I said "Sure, that's great, thank you." My mind was spinning "did she mean $15 off or $15 total?!?" But I didn't ask, because I didn't want to jinx it. Holy carp, I just got a $70 gas can for $15! Score!

I'm not the one that put the dent in the can! I would have been happy-ish with taking $15 off. But I certainly wasn't going to tell them "I'd have paid more."

I know you didn't dent it but should have put a bigger one on the other side and gotten it for 10 bucks. Still. YOU ARE BAD MAN. too lazy to change to green font on both post.
I am typing this with stupid smile on my face, just so you know |

I pulled up the first link I could find, so this is not an endorsement of this brand, but the idea is solid.
Use your present "unsafety can", add a high flow nozzle, and drill a vent, and call it a day. I live in Virginia, I do not want to hear your northern cans can't cut it. I've only had one can leak at a seal- one which I picked up off a highway, one which essentially got chucked off a flatbed at 70 mph. My other 5 or 10 have been fine. And that's in the deep ol' south! With proper ventilation and safety features to defeat government safety features, they are fine. We've owned several metal cans along the way. Between a converted plastic "un"safety can to a real safety can vs. a metal safety can, I'd prefer the converted plastic safety can. Lighter. Simpler. Less likely to damage your 911 fender in an emergency ![]() For less than 20 bucks you will be in the promised land of octane. edit- $20 dollars + a new five gallon "unsafety can"- plastic and still less than a bs spouted metal can. https://www.smartsaker.com/products/saker-upgraded-replacement-gas-can-spout-with-flexible-nozzle?variant=6e0f7c6d-2ab2-4d5e-8216-b97ce9d42984&utm_source=google&utm_medium=23231154385&utm_campaign=Shopping_STD-plz_xxx_other&utm_content=6e0f7c6d-2ab2-4d5e-8216-b97ce9d42984&utm_term=188606997256&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23231154385&gbraid=0AAAAAoePq2BE_gqjUul7mXuibrEFMLhsJ&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoMXQBhDcARIsAH-eEttdySnBLfUxBdmOPRCEEeN1LI1D8B6vIhEKMCpBt7LZAFVc3-8GJU4aArxkEALw_wcB Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 05-23-2026 at 03:50 PM.. |

Ok, so I just ordered from that link, Leaky. If I start getting more spam, it's your fault.

For some reason, we always lose plastic gas cans at work. First thing I do after buying a new one is order the old style nozzles like the link above.
The new style safety gas can, take two hands to operate the nozzle and your third hand to hold the gas can. 🙄 |

![]() ![]() This is my metal gas can. I remember filling up grandpa's lawnmower with that can when I was still in the single digits age wise. It is from a refinery that was in my wife's home town. Long gone now. I have had people offer to buy it when I am at the gas station filling it up. I never put more than three gallons in it as that is heavy and hard to control the flow of gas.

Try blowing the dent out with air. If it works I'll give you $16 for it!

^better read the description before using..those are not fuel containers. According to one comment you risk engine damage if used as such. They look like the fuel bottles we use for off roading but they're not

Just don't split out a seam. That'd be bad.

I did not proof the units I posted, but my 3 like this have held many gallons 5 at a time over the years without any issues.... I did always keep them in the shade in the paddock on race weekends... Another plus is you can see any even light sediment in the bottom of these, whereas a tin bucket does not allow you to know what junk is collecting in it.
