Holiday Grilling

If looking for dawgs for the grill....I had a new brand that is very good.
Applegate Natural Beef Dogs. They come in a pack of 6..which makes them a little pricier than most. My favorites before were Hebrew Nationals or Nathans...these are better imo.
They were just added to Walmarts offerings last week. I don't know about other stores.

We had it tough. The neighbors across the street grilled bratwurst, hot dogs, and ribs. Lots of other items, and multiple sweets from cupcakes to brownies. All great. They have a pool in their back yard, and lots of friends and family came over to eat and swim. We stayed out of the pool.

I did not want to have to wait 30 minutes after eating to get in the pool!

The dumbest "mom rule" in the book. I never got cramps after eating in my long life.

The Applegate are good, but I like this brand more.

They come in 3 size/shapes, short and fat, long and thin, and hors d'oeuvre.

For dinner this evening I’m going to grill some pork steaks, boil up some corn on the cob and watermelon for dessert!

I remember as a kid at home, that whenever we had a picnic or ate outside, watermelon was the star of the show!
Now, I seldom eat it...don't know why.

According to their website.
I've also bought them at Whole Foods.

We get it from time to time. When we get it, it's usually the little round ones, not the giant oblong monsters that I remember from my youth.

What's weird is that I don't think our grandsons like it. The oldest doesn't much like fruit or stuff with a weird texture. I think Watermelon fits in with that. And the younger one has gotten to where he's copying his older brother even though he's always loved fruit. I'm not sure about our youngest, the cousin of the other two. He's at a point where when we see him, he copies the other two, but maybe he'll eat it when he's at home. Because for whatever reason, what the boys will eat varies by location and who they are with. They'll eat stuff at our place that they don't eat at home, and vice versa.

Next time I'm near Target, I'll try them. Costco is the only other store of that list that is within an hour of me...and I'm not a member!

The red seedless is what my Wife loves. Not the personal size, basketball size.

Has to be USA, preferably grown in Yuma, Az. Mexico are a huge disappointment, watery with no taste.

I finally found them today. Not Az grown but Texas. But they have the look. Round (female, oval are male) with the yellow area with good "scratch marks" (many bees pollinated the blossom).

That's the trick. No sniffing, no thumping. Trust me, I've tossed many a melon because it didn't pass Wifey's QC taste test.

And have the G'kids try it sprinkled with Tajin. That's how the "cool people" eat it!

I usually pick mine by stopping by the field with the wife while the workers are pickin' and tossin', and have her ask (Spanish is her first language, I can order a beer and ask for the bathroom) to either trade a cold 6 pack of beer or $10 for a couple of good melons. And the migrant workers always pick good ones, it is fun watching 3 or 4 guys arguing over 3 or 4 melons as to which two are the best.

One of my friends owns a family farm 1/4 section. He just grows hay for his cattle most of the time. He had someone lease the land to grow watermelons. They had a bumper crop. The family that leased the land picked all the watermelons they could stand to pick. They called him and said the were done, and paid the final lease payment. He drove out into the field, and filled up his van and gave away all he could to friends. I got three. He then let his cattle into that part of the field, and used a sledge hammer to break open the remaining melons. He said the cattle were very happy to eat the rest of them. He had a great photo of one cow with a red face covered in watermelon.

We spatchcocked an organic chicken from Whole Foods. Stupid expensive for chicken, but worth the occasional splurge. Rubbed with Meat Church Holy Gospel and brown sugar, cooked on the Traeger. It was absolutely delicious!

I was near a Target Store today and stopped in to look for these. Surprisingly, there was a worker near the hot dog section and asked if he could help.
He looked on his phone and said all Targets buy regional if possible..he had never seen that brand here.

I might have someone check Costco for me.

Looks like Applegate sells more than one type of hot dog.
