Can you
whistle really loud? I've tried to learn it a bunch of times with no success. Tried the looped thumb and finger, one finger from each hand and of course simply shaping my mouth n blowing. Always admired the Mexican gangster I grew up with that could do the chirp-chirp thing, both in wind and out winded. I learned to do the chirp-chirp with a sandwich bag, but that sucked...
What has worked for you, and who taught ya? I'm gunna google it and try some more...

Two families my son grow up with have family whistles. It’s not loud but high pitched. The kids could hear it clear across a football field and knew to make eye contact with their parents.

Yep and without using my fingers. I taught myself as a kid. My uncle could do it so that was reason enough.

A dog walking buddy can whistle so loudly that it almost blows my ear drums out. Seriously.

I am able to whistle very loudly. I tuck my tongue behind my lower lip to form a small pocket into which I blow a stream of air.

My mom and sister were able to whistle loud. I was never able to, but wish I did. Maybe there’s a YouTube video on how to do it?

There used to be a telephone lineman that'd come out to the vineyard to fix the lines that was a pro whistler. I've never heard someone whistle such pure notes before. Don't know how loud he could do it but it sure was pretty to listen to.
I can whistle, but not very loudly.

I put my tongue close to my front teeth, and blow. Loud whistles.

Many concrete guys could communicate with the truck driver very well in four distinct whistle tones, start and stop the drum, move forward and stop. I loved watching that ballet. Now everything is pumped and the hose is controlled by a remote.
No, I can't do it and I've tried until it hurts. I think everyone can do it if and when they discover the perfect positioning but sometimes I wonder if I have any front teeth.

A college buddy taught me, and then regretted it. I can use looped fingers, but usually use 2 the index and ring from each hand.
I never figured it out (or tried really) to do it without using my fingers. That would be the next step. Fingers in mouth, bottom edge of tip of tongue up against finger tips with tongue curled. Blow.

I've always believed that it has something to do with the architecture of your mouth, which can vary considerably among people. There are your obvious over and underbites but also many other more subtle differences. I've never been able to whistle loudly and lord knows I tried to learn when I was younger...gave up a long time ago. Other kids could do it easily, it's not exactly some genius level skill. As a consolation, I can whistle nicely at normal volume using the old, "put your lips together and blow" method and also do the wind whistling thing.
On a side note, literally, the most amusing whistle is known as "the Mexican whistle" that seemingly all guys from that part of the world can do. I think that I first heard it used regularly by Danny Trejo, the quintessential Mexican, many years ago. Before he was even an actor, I knew him. He does it with a skill and with comic timing that even impresses his countrymen, much less any gringo. It's sort of an *up and down* tone done in quick succession that really sounds like the whistler is trying to say something or issue a warning...you really know it when you hear it. Anyone in SoCal knows what I'm talking about. It's also used when someone doesn't want to say a dirty word and it can be side-splitting hilarious in that context. Many people thought that Leo DiCaprio should have won the Oscar for "One Battle After Another" simply for his Mexican whistle after getting directions from the two guys on the side of the road during the car chase sequence. It was perfection but of course, he's a local boy, grew up in Los Feliz. ![]()

Taught myself back in my teen years, for me its both index fingers in to the first knuckle touching my tongue that is curled down to my lower gum.
Loud enough to hurt my own ears. It's come in handy a few times, used it to locate hiking buddies in the distance or get a dog's attention. Very similar in tone to a Marmot's whistle, enough that I've got them to spin around and take a good look at me, then again maybe they don't like it
