Good Bye Stop-Start!

I had my Civic Hybrid for a month before I realized the stop-start feature was gone.
(my 22 SI had it..but was defeatable)

Then I read this in this months Car and Driver....

"Since 2012, automakers received emissions credits for including stop-start tech in their cars. But no more. The EPA recently announced that it will no longer grant credits to automakers for implementing stop-start, which it called 'almost universally hated'.
The stop-start incentives were part of a larger "off-cycle" credits program tied to using new fuel saving tech, and the whole shebang has been axed"

Good riddance for something that I have always hated. Only my daughter’s GLK has it, but it also has a button that she has been well trained into pushing every time she drives.

I was surprised to find that my Rav4 didn't have it when I bought it back in 22. My wife's 2020 Highlander has it but you have to apply a certain amount of brake pressure for it to activate. I think it can be disabled in settings but never tried.

My 2020 Ram doesn’t have it, apparently it was packaged with the mild hybrid system that I very intentionally avoided.

My SI had the same button and also if you selected 'sport' driving mode, the stop-start was defeated. Everytime I drove it, I wanted 'sport' mode, so the feature never came on.

My friend's Ford F150 has it. You can turn it off but you have to do it every time you shut the truck off and restart.

^^^ The few times that I forgot to disable it in my SI...I could hardly tell it was doing it.
I rent cars frequently, and most all of them that had it, it was obnoxiously apparent.

But the SI was a manual, so that might make a difference.

My wife's Macan has it, but we just programmed the keys to disable it. Effectually no start stop at all.

My vehicles are so old that they do not have this feature. Of course the vehicles I drive at work have it and I turn that feature off when performing the internal function check.

Seeing that most vehicles today have various driving 'modes'....I think the stop-start feature should only be available on the 'Econ Mode'. The drivers that use the Econ are the ones that are trying for better mpg. The other mode drivers don't care for the feature.

Google says only ~39% of 2026 vehicles have stop/start and only as much as 62% in prior model years, so it was never ubiquitous.

My 2019 4Runner doesn't have it.

^^^ The incentives started in 2012, so it was up to the manu. to do it or not. Some might have thought it wasn't worth the money.
I rent cars 8 or more times a year and the last 6 or 7 years every one of them had the stop-start. But I always rent a compact or mid-size sedan. There might be a reason why the larger models were not fitted with it.

My 2019 F150 has it and I hate it. Stupid to be sitting at a stoplight in 90 degree heat with the AC blasting and the engine shuts off. Waiting for the 2027 F150's to come out without the "feature"

I travel a sold 50% of the year, all of the rental class type vehicles have it. I think there were reasons tied to the incentives or maybe gas guzzler taxes that many larger vehicles don’t.

When I had my Gladiator manual it was obnoxious as hell, I bought a JL Tazer programmer to make it default to off.

^^^ That makes sense about the incentives/gas guzzler taxes.

I have always been pleasantly surprised that my wife’s Outback doesn’t have it.
I have driven/rented some cars that had it, and I don’t like it although none of the cars that I’ve driven have been hybrids.

I think it’s a good thing for the huge bulk of the population that have or see their vehicles as appliances.

It won’t save one person an appreciable amount of fuel, but it’ll save a fair amount of fuel over the course of a year when you add the small amount of fuel saved per driver for millions of drivers.

Much like putting four cylinder turbos into everything, the fuel savings is more theoretical than real. If you drive in the summer and come to a stoplight, most cars will shut off for 20-30 sec tops. Any longer and they can’t keep the A/C cold. So your 4 minutes sitting at a stoplight is still mostly with the engine running, but with accelerated starter wear as a bonus!

Note that some hybrids have electric A/C compressors so that changes the dynamic. But hybrids are sort of a different beast anyway.

^^^ I'm wondering if mine is electric. When it's running, I never hear the sound of the clutch putting the compressor in and out of service....it's quiet. But it works great.
