The Data doesn't lie...Lake Speed Jr. video

Bottom line? If your car's design allows it, pre fill your oil filter when changing oil.

Interesting, they're measuring the indicators of wear in parts per million. That's pretty small.

Good video. I was more interested in the engine test cell, trying to see what all was in it. I didn't see how they "burned" the power. When I worked at GM I helped run a lab with six engine test cells. We used eddy current dynos to absorb the power.

I have stories.

We ran two 350s with 700R4 transmissions 17 hours a day in two of the cells, testing the transmissions. The cycle started with the engine at idle, when the program started, the actuator yanked the throttle wide open and kept it there until the dyno clocked the equivalent of 90 mph, then it would close the throttle, let it coast down a while, then force a downshift that sent the engine to the redline, run it back to 90, then let it idle to a stop. A cycle took about 2 minutes. Over and over for the whole shift.

There were also two 3800s with transmissions, testing lock-up torque converters. They ran all day too, although in not such an extreme way.

Usually there was something else in one of the cells doing something.

Five or six engines accelerating. Over and over. Out of synch. All day long. Even with the cell doors closed it didn't take long for the racket to start to get to you.

We were doing bearing tests on a 6.2 diesel when the crankshaft broke. We rented an electric jackhammer to get the engine apart.

Good times.

I have prefilled all my oil filters, except on the 911 with a dry sump and a horizontal filter of course.

I have always run 20-50 in the 911, even in the cold months.

It is interesting that they found water on a non prefilled filter. I would have to guess that water is from the air in the filter, as air always has some moisture in it.

Interesting video. Lots of people will continue to be lazy and not prefill the filter. Not on my El Camino.

My wife's Macan has the oil filter cartridge up on the top, so no prefilling that.

On the flip side I buy my oil filters for the 986S/996C4 from LN Engineering. They place a warning sticker on top of the box that says " do not prefill with oil " . My 3.6/3.8 engines were built by FSI . Jake Raby specifically told me to not prefill .

When I do an oil change on both engines when I go to start I crank just enough for the engine to " catch " and turn the key off . Four to five cycles and then start the engine . I have been driving for 53 years with a large variety of cars and trucks . Air cooled and water cooled . I have never prefilled an oil filter .

I have a lot of respect for Lake Speed Jr , to say he understands oil is an understatement . Have I been changing oil wrong for 53 years ? Maybe and maybe not . For my Porsche's I follow what Jake says because he built them . So far knock on wood I have never lost an engine .
