Elderly drivers, unbearable tradgedy

There have of course been many articles this week on elderly drivers in the media, one of the things that many of them do is "self regulate", ie. stay close to home, never drive at night or on the freeway, etc....

The accident in Santa Monica happened about 20 blocks from home in a small city that the driver has lived in for decades, just going to the Post Office on a Weds. afternoon. They say that most accidents in general happen close to home. I can remember when my Grandmother used to still drive, (20+ yrs. ago), and she would not go on the freeway. BTW, hopefully I have not given the impression that I do not have sympathy for the driver of this accident, that could have been one of my elderly relatives.

In Australia, or NSW at least, elderly drivers have to take an annual driving test, and many of them are restricted to driving within a small radius of their home.

I think that we should have some of the Aussie methods adopted here in the states. For instance "L" and "P" plates are the first step.
