Around here there fire some hand held electronic device at the receipt and it checks that it's a sale within the last 10 minutes or so and displays the items on the screen. We all have to show the receipt.

In the drive through building supplies part of Bunnings I jokingly said to the man at the door that I'd never steal little things but if you ever see me in something like a Porsche call the police. He had a good laugh when the next day I picked up a bag of cement in the Porsche.

Retail theft is a real problem and higher costs are the results we all pay for . The receipt checker is performing a function to help reduce theft . Even if only setting a visual barrier for potential thieves . Show the receipt , smile and have a nice day .

Pro Tip: Buy the shovel at a HD in other town, the tarp at a flea market, zip ties at a Harbour Fright, duct tape at Office Depot and don't forget latex gloves at a medical supply store. Wear a different hat and a big coat even a dress if you need to. Always keep your head down. A friend in the business told me this.

I will say, we did our quarterly run at Sam's yesterday. Paper products, bulk items, etc.
Same thing- cashier checked everything out. Manager watches us leave the cashier- and asks to see our receipt. I cooperate- not worth my time arguing. One of our large bulk packs of paper towels was not scanned, it was not on the receipt. Cashiers make mistakes- stores are allowed imho to assure mistakes are minimalized. So, I placed the 3'square pack of paper towels on the floor and left. It was one of the things we did not really need.
Life is too short to sweat the small stuff.

I never shop at Walmart as I don't want someone to take my picture and post it on the "People of Walmart" web site!

Dixie, bottom line. If you want to shop at their store, you have to play by their rules. If you can't abide, go to another store. There are lots of other places to shop.

The collective wisdom in this forum is truly amazing. If it were me I would take it and move on. If you go by the rules life is much easier.

I send my list to Wal-Mart on line and it somehow appears outside
my garage door a few hours later. Everything from food to Mobil1
to pool supplies. I have not walked into that place in years.

I online order for pickup at Home Depot all the time. Life is too short to wait for help opening locked paints, wire, etc.

'Wholesale' clubs have been checking and marking receipts for years. I get it, an ex-friend (and subcontractor) was caught stealing a TV from BJ's. I think he was using the receipt before they marked them, and went around and picked up a second one to return, making the first one 'free'. What a coincidence, jobsite thefts stopped at the same time.

"They are looking for big ticket items." Sure that's what a thief would do, buy a diamond ring and steal a candy bar.

They go through a short training to identify thieves' behavior traits. You might have a ham between your legs but they won't ask about it unless they don't see in on the list.
They might have been alerted by the floor walkers about a specific item, therefore the list check. It's a good way to start a detention.

For the most part it's all smoke and mirrors. Amateur thieves see the check and are intimidated. The pros enjoy it.

I have to pile on and say what's the big deal? You can legally walk through denying producing the receipt and they need probable cause for any further action. Continued likewise behavior will for sure attract more attention each time you enter.

Maybe that's what you're looking for.

Believe me, I have no tolerance for that crap but, I never give the receipt checkers a hard time they are just doing the job they are told to do. Especially when its some elderly person.

Unfortunately the theft problem is huge. Hell one of the Wally's by me has the tree air fresheners under lock and key. That's how sad its gotten.

Because of her attitude with how she's asking. It's like it's personal. I asked my neighbor, the retired cop, and he says if they thought I was shoplifting they wouldn't be asking. They'd already have it on camera. He said the employee is probably on a bit of a power trip and is over performing their job.

I'm going to ask to speak with the security manager next time I go shopping. Not to get the employee in trouble, but so we can all deescalate the situation.

It only takes a second to mark my receipt. Doesn't bother me. Side note: I was at WalMart. I rounded a corner and was about to head down an aisle. Whoa..a couple was way too physically involved. I course-corrected and got out of there. But it reminded me of something I saw on PeopleOfWalmart.com. A couple was fully horizontal in an aisle. The caption read "Clean-up on aisle 5 - STAT!".

Dixie, you are just creating drama .
As we said in the Military, "Is that the mtn you want to die for?"
To me, it seems counterintuitive to go somewhere to shop, you know their rules, and want to trespass them.
Perhaps find a cause worth rebelling against?\

I've felt similarly harassed at my local Home Depot by the Heating and A/C Specialist camped out by the front door. "Hi my name is Bob the heating and a/c specialist what brings you in today" I go to HD at lease every other day. After about 4-5 approaches with me stating that I'm in good shape and not interested in some cases he starts following me in the store. Finally one day after here we go again, I stopped got close to him as said "Look At My Face - We've had this conversation 4 times already!".

I thought about complaining to the Manager but before doing so he was no longer there. His replacements have been far less intrusive.

She just works there. If you have a beef with their shrinkage control methods, you need to talk to whomever made the policy.
