Please help me plan my next road trip to Boise, ID
![]() Next year, Porsche Parade is in Boise, ID. As you can see from the photo above, I have driven my 85 911 to all the states in grey. Next year, I want to knock off several more states. My "rule" is I have to be in the state long enough to have a meal, and use the restroom to say I have been in the state. So far I am planning the first night in Cheyenne, WY. That is a 10 hours of drive time for day one. I don't know if there is any special site to see in that area. Any ideas? Day to will be to Mt. Rushmore, SD. Easy drive and that will give me some time to spend at the monument. I have heard of great scenery and roads in the Black Hills of South Dakota and I need help on finding those roads. I need something to get me to North Dakota. Any great roads or sites on the southern part of North Dakota? I will spent one night with my cousin in Billings, MT. One day at Yellowstone, I want to see Glacier national park in Montana. Then over to Boise, ID. Boise is close to Oregon, so I may sneak over to Oregon. I think Washington, Minnesota and Wisconsin are too far off the path to visit this trip. Any help to plan the trip will be appreciated. Next year on the trip I will update this post with pictures from the trip.

seems to me you have it pretty covered, unless you wanted to add states by going straight up, then west to Wyoming..

Not much in the Dakotas but Rushmore is there, since you are right there, drive north to use the bathroom up at Fargo and dip your toes into Mini-soda too. Drive west into Yellowstone. ID and MT are very pretty Rocky Mt states. Glacier is a must but I would go up there through ID instead of MT. The drive up through Kelispell or Flathead Lake is a very pretty drive. Driving up Montana off the 15 is just slightly rolling flat land. Since you are in Yellowstone, you must see the big Titties, I mean, Grand Teton and Jackson (some people know it as Jackson Hole). The drive from Yellowstone, take the little road that goes pass Jenny Lake, and not the interstate. Its a beautiful drive. Have lunch or dinner at Jackson. Plenty great restaurants there compared to West Yellowstone. We spent two week there when kids were small on our way up to Canada.
Must do at Glacier: Drive Gong-to-the-sun-road. I have driven it few times but the next time, I am taking that open top bus. I want to enjoy the mountain. Logan Pass visitor center is a must stop and spend some time there to take in the view. I can spend a day there. |

Glen, if you are that far up, Glacier to Waterton in Canada is only an hour away (Bring your passport). Getting across at that little border is very easy. There isn't too many people there. I think we waited for the two cars in front of us for about 5 min. That was in early May. Its so remote, only a few campers are getting across. Waterton is less crowded compared to Glacier but there's more to do or see at Glacier. Hey, you can have afternoon tea at the lodge, go for a drive or a boat ride at the lake.

I drove Boise to Wichita earlier this year to pick up my son’s SL55, with a stay in Laramie. ID and UT were gorgeous, WY was hit or miss, CO into KS you can set your cruise control and take a nap. I’d love to do the drive on some backroads, sounds fun!

You are getting up in my part of the US. Here is what I would recommend once you get to Cheyenne. Leave out of Cheyenne and hit US 85 to Lusk, Wyoming. Then head east on US 20 towards Chadron, Nebraska. About 15 miles before you get to Chadron, you can head north on US 385. US 385 will take you all the way up to Custer, South Dakota. From there, you can either continue on US 385 and then east on highway 244 to Mount Rushmore, or go east out of Custer on 16A Which will also get you up to Highway 244 and then you would go west to Mount Rushmore. 16A is much more scenic, but you are going to be there in the middle of July and traffic is horrendous on 16A. It has several hairpin curves and traffic is usually backed up and never going more than 20 miles an hour. Personally, I find Mount Rushmore to be a bit of a letdown. Quite the tourist destination.
When you leave Mount Rushmore, head west again, on Highway 244 back to US 385. Stay north on 385 and it will take you all the way up to Deadwood South Dakota. Fun place to visit, but will be packed with motorcycles in July. Head north out of Deadwood on US 85 up to I 90. I 90 west will take you into Spearfish, South Dakota. But just before you get to Spearfish, you can exit onto Highway 14A. It will go west for just a little bit and then go south into Spearfish Canyon. Spearfish Canyon, to me, is well worth the drive. Once you get to the end of Spearfish Canyon, turn around and head back up to Spearfish. Hit the bathroom, get something to drink, and then head north on US 85 To Bowman North Dakota. Nothing to see there, but you will have been in North Dakota, and then can head west into Montana. At Bowman, take US 12 west which will take you to I 94 down into Billings.

Yellowstone is just so very cool. Treat yourself. I think you could go from Boise -> Hermiston -> Walla Walla. Some good roads in there. Walla Walla is a nice town and good place to spend the night and sample some pretty awesome Cabernets and similar. Sounds like a fun trip. Keep us posted. If you make it to Portland, I have a guest bed and can show you around.
