The USS Forrestal CV 59. An icon in Naval Aviation history. Look at that flight deck! A-1's, A-4's, F-8's, and yes A-3D's. Think of classic Porsches you'd like to drive. With the glaring exception of the A-3D, this is a flight deck of aircraft any pilot would love to fly. My sincere apologies to all A-3 aircrew out there.

For those among us, myself included, who are not aviation buffs whats the story on the A-3's ?

Nate is right...I actually know a few old A-3 guys (and a woman NFO) and they always laugh that A-3 stood for "all three dead".

It had no ejection seat(s), was very under powered off the cat and had miserable missions. In other words, if

Like most aircraft, the aircrew seemed to speak fondly of the jet when they weren't *****ing about it:)

My father loved the Navy, even though he was only in for 3 years. He served in the Pacific on a destroyer.

I love the way Forestal tells them to be proud of what they did and of the Navy. I don't think my old man had to be told tho - he often sang sailor songs to us as we traveled or at bedtime. "Happy is the day when sailor get his pay as we go rolling rolling on - rolling on..."
