That's how it works but it can be a little scary if you don't hook into the log properly. It actually pulls the log onto the auger and splits the log pretty clean. This was beech and very hard dense wood but it did the job, no problem. The other arm that is below the auger keeps the log from spinning, not good when that happens, must have all appendages out of the way. Makes fast work of big pieces.
This is what I use for the finishing touch.

Have the same rig on a post hole digger. Have split 10ft x 24 in logs w/ it and a mid 20 hp tractor-freaking awesome. The best part is to run it half way in to a long log, raise the pto, and take it anywhere you want w/ the tractor.
