That F1 topiary is just plain cool!

Paul K 05-27-2005 06:50 PM

Thom,

No kidding. I am already planning a topiary 911 in the yard. And trying to figure how to explain it to the wife...

Cheers!

Paul.

saw this earlier today while working. not sure if it was a tornado or a waterspout. it would come down and then go back up several times before disappearing

Umm.... A waterspout is technically a tornado. It just touches down on water.

It's a cold air funnel (http://aeff.uaa.alaska.edu/ams/ancams/papers/Cold_Air_Funnel_Clouds.html). Sortof like a tornado, but usually don't cause damage. If you didn't see really pronounced rotation, it was probably nothing. They cause tons of panic in places that don't see real tornados often. Once you see a good tornado or funnel, there's no mistaking them.

it never touched ground or water as far as I could tell. it may have been over the bay or the gulf since I was quite close by. I could certainly see the rotation though. I've only seen this once before

Not entirely true. Being in KS where we see numberous Tornados every year in the spring and early summers, that picture is definately something we'd see in our skies.

Given the number of styles and sizes of Tornado that we get, you tend to take it all serious, even the little rope tornadoes. The only thing I can't see in the above pic is the cloud structure.

Here's a pic of a rope I took last year. It's kind of hard to see, but it starts close to the top right of the pic, see the dark portion of it. It goes through that 'fluffy' cloud, and continues downward, white rope. That was probably about 2 miles west of my house, and was very long.

Here are a few shots of a waterspout of the coast of Key West I shot in July, 2002. It was actually pretty cool! ;)

I wandered over to see what PeoplesNation was all about. Looked pretty quiet.

"Using data from CT scans, researchers in France have created a model of King Tutankhamun as he looked shortly before dying at age 19.

The work was based on sophisticated CT scans of the mummy taken Jan. 5 in his tomb at Luxor in the Valley of the Kings. CT scanning, typically used for medical diagnoses, can be used to produce three-dimensional images.

Those scans showed that Tut was a healthy, well-fed young man at the time of his death and yielded no evidence of foul play."
