Some of the dams (hydroelectric plants) in our area are proud of their small stockpiles of African "elephant wood." The assembly that includes the generator rotor (up to 50 feet in diameter), the shaft (LONG, WIDE shaft) and turbine that goes down into the dam weigh hundreds of tons, and they say a block of this elephant wood is the best thing we've found to use as a bearing. In between rebuilds, these generator assemblies can go 30 years. They say elephant wood is now extinct.
