Glad the Coast Guard could help, I didn't come on board until late 1991 as part of the team that worked both the Point Winslow and the Point Heyer. She went to the Gulf in 95/96 and from there I don't know where to.

SoCal911T 04-27-2012 05:52 PM

Well, you were a couple of years later, but thanks all the same.

That's a lonely stretch of water from Morro Bay to Monterey. Fun drive up HWY 1 but very different by boat.

Had my own encounter with a whale while driving a small boat <20' on Monterey Bay. Passed underneath us, was afraid to do much other than rev engine thought if we moved it'd surface and take us out. Not a headline I'd want to be part of "Coast Guard rescues Coast Guard".

I was delivering a boat from LA to SF back in '03 or '04 (a 1960 46' Chris Craft Roamer named Steel Magnolia), and had to be towed into Morro Bay by the Coasties TWICE after major engine failures. I have the utmost respect for them. Great bunch of guys. Thanks for your service!

I was in the the Reserves from 74 to 97 with a couple of summers in San Francisco and Yorkton VA. Ran small boats on the weekends out of Monterey and Morro Bay until 91 and then what was left of the unit went to the Point Heyer and Winslow. I retired in 97. Worked beside a hell of bunch of guys there who weren't much older than 19 or 20. They did their job day in and day out, some good, some bad, but for the most part they did it

The Coast Guard puts a lot of trust in them to carry out the mission and it's only gotten bigger since 9/11. The old saying is you have to go out, but you don't have to come back. I have great respect for all of the military, every situtation is different, but they do what's asked of them. We owe them more than they will ever be paid.
