If I was in a uniform that tied a nose around my neck and sent me to battle, I would make damn sure that it was a clip on!

They are clip ons for that very reason.

If the baton is drilled on the "receiving" end, and weighted with lead shot, it can do even more damage. Or so I've heard...

It could, but never seen/heard it done with a polycarbonate baton. That's just a plain plastic side-handle baton.
