Shouldn't that plug be a gfi? Or at least on a GFI protected circuit?

masraum 03-25-2014 04:11 PM

Yowza, glad everyone is OK and the house is still there.

I know around here, all bathroom and kitchen counter plugs have to be served by a GFCI. I installed one GFCI in the kitchen that covers all of the outlets over the counters.

Re the GFI, the house has two. But now that you mention it, only the breaker tripped. I will look into that and report back. Thanks!

At 7:00am my wife closed the door to the microwave above and saw "sparks fly out the bottom" of the microwave. The breaker tripped. Without fixing anything, wife and son reset the breaker. It reset. When I got home, someone bumped it container again and again we saw sparks, and then we saw:

It could have been worse. The tongs were connecting with 100V. The tongs were in a steel container. The steel container was up against the ss cook top...

How about a few more photos - hard to tell what happened there, Dave... :D

Replace the outlet at a minimum.

GFI have been in the code book long before 2004. Install them and you will be fine.

Nothing a little makeup and some sunglasses can't fix.

Per code, you can only load one additional recep to a GFCI device.
Check how many you have on that...

What do you tell an "outlet" with a black eye?

Nothing, you already explained it once!

We have a kitchen only because it came with the house. It is a good place to keep the fridge and the beer.
